1 Um dia, Sansão foi a Gaza, cidade dos filisteus, e passou a noite em casa de uma meretriz. 2 Depressa correu a notícia de que fora visto na cidade. As autoridades foram alertadas e muita gente decidiu ficar de noite a espiar as saídas da cidade, para o capturar quando tentasse escapar. "Pela manhã", pensaram eles, "quando houver a luz do dia, haveremos de encontrá-lo e poderemos matá-lo."

3 Quando era meia-noite, Sansão levantou-se, veio para a rua, dirigiu-se à saída da cidade, pegou nos portões juntamente com as ombreiras mais a tranca, levantou-os do chão, pô-los aos ombros e levou-os até ao cimo da elevação que está defronte de Hebrom.

4 Mais tarde, apaixonou-se por uma rapariga chamada Dalila, lá para os lados do vale de Soreque. 5 Os cinco chefes dos filisteus foram pessoalmente ter com ela, pedindo-lhe que procurasse descobrir o que é que fazia de Sansão um homem tão forte, para que soubessem como vencê-lo, subjugá-lo e prendê-lo. "Damos-te cada um de nós 1100 peças de dinheiro por esse serviço!", prometeram.

6 Então Dalila começou a pedir a Sansão que lhe revelasse o segredo da sua força. "Por favor, Sansão, diz-me a razão por que és tão forte. Acho que ninguém seria capaz de te capturar!"

7 "Olha", disse-lhe ele, "se me atarem com sete vergas de vimes frescos, tornar-me-ei tão fraco como qualquer pessoa."

8 Então trouxeram-lhe as sete vergas e, enquanto dormia, ela atou-o com aquilo. 9 Uns quantos homens esconderam-se no quarto contíguo; depois de o ter atado, ela gritou: "Sansão! Estão aqui os filisteus para te atacarem!" Ele partiu as vergas como se fosse fio de estopa sobre fogo. E continuaram a ignorar o segredo da sua força.

10 Dalila insistiu: "Estiveste a fazer pouco de mim! Mentiste-me! Sansão, diz-me, peço-te, como é que te podem prender."

11 "Pois bem, se eu for atado com cordas novas, que nunca tenham sido usadas, serei tão fraco como qualquer outra pessoa."

12 Então novamente, enquanto dormia, Dalila atou-o com cordas novas. Os homens estavam no quarto ao lado como da outra vez e Dalila gritou: "Sansão! Os filisteus vêm aí para te atacar!" Ele quebrou logo as cordas como se fossem meros fios.

13 "Tens estado todo este tempo a troçar de mim e a mentir-me! Diz-me lá, Sansão, como é que realmente te podem prender."

"Escuta, se teceres os meus cabelos no teu tear e os fixares com a cavilha, ficarei sem forças e serei como qualquer outro homem."

14 Enquanto ele dormia, ela fez isso e gritou-lhe: "Estão aí os filisteus, Sansão!" Ele despertou e arrancou o cabelo que estava preso, partindo o tear.

15 "Como podes tu dizer que me amas, se não tens confiança em mim?" disse-lhe ela. "Já por três vezes fazes pouco de mim e ainda não me disseste onde está o segredo da tua força!" 16 E dia após dia ela insistia, de tal forma que, não podendo aguentar aquilo mais tempo, 17 lhe contou o seu segredo. "O meu cabelo nunca foi cortado", confessou, "porque tenho sido um nazireu de Deus, desde o meu nascimento. Se o meu cabelo fosse cortado, perderia a minha força e tornar-me-ia igual a qualquer outro."

18 Dalila percebeu que desta vez lhe dizia a verdade e por isso mandou chamar os chefes dos filisteus: "Venham já, só mais esta vez, porque agora já me disse tudo." Eles vieram e trouxeram o dinheiro. 19 Ela fê-lo adormecer com a cabeça no seu colo e disseram a um homem para lhe vir cortar o cabelo. Dalila começou a bater-lhe, mas via-se que já não possuía a mesma força. 20 Ela gritou: "Chegaram os filisteus para te capturar, Sansão!"

Ele acordou e pensou consigo: "Bom, farei como antes e fico livre." Porque ainda não tinha constatado que o Senhor o deixara.

21 Então os filisteus amarraram-no, esvaziaram-lhe os olhos e levaram-no para Gaza, onde o prenderam com cadeias de bronze duplas. E faziam-no mover uma mó de grão na prisão. 22 Entretanto o cabelo começou a crescer-lhe novamente.

23 Os chefes filisteus organizaram uma grande festa para celebrar a captura de Sansão. O povo fez sacrifícios ao seu deus Dagom e louvavam-no: "O nosso deus entregou-nos o nosso inimigo, Sansão!", diziam eles com satisfação, 24 olhando para ele na prisão. "O nosso deus deu-nos a vitória sobre o nosso inimigo, que matou tantos de nós!" 25 A certa altura, aquela gente excitada pediu: "Tragam cá para fora Sansão, para que possamos rir da sua figura!"

Ele foi tirado da cela e puseram-no no templo, entre os pilares que suportavam o teto. 26 Sansão disse para o rapaz que o levava pela mão: "Deixa-me apalpar e sentir onde estão as colunas, para que descanse um pouco contra elas."

27 Naquela altura, o templo estava repleto de gente. Estavam também ali os cinco reis dos filisteus. Só no terraço havia umas 3000 pessoas, pretendendo ver Sansão, com os seus próprios olhos, fazer palhaçadas diante deles.

28 Então Sansão orou assim: "Ó Senhor Deus, lembra-te de mim mais uma vez e dá-me novamente força, para que possa dar a paga a estes filisteus pela perda dos meus olhos." 29 Sansão abraçou as colunas e aplicou toda a sua força. 30 "Que eu morra com os filisteus!", foi a sua última frase. E o templo ruiu, soterrando o povo todo, incluindo os seus cinco chefes. Os que matou naquela ocasião, na sua própria morte, foram mais do que os que matou em toda a vida.

31 Mais tarde, os irmãos e outros parentes vieram buscar o corpo e foram enterrá-lo entre Zora e Estaol, onde o pai, Manoá, também estava sepultado. Tinha sido juiz em Israel por 20 anos.

And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web. 14 And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.

15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;*16.16 vexed: Heb. shortened 17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.*16.21 put out: Heb. bored out

22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.*16.22 after…: or, as when he was shaven 23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. 24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.*16.24 which…: Heb. and who multiplied our slain 25 And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.*16.25 them: Heb. before them 26 And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them. 27 Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. 28 And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.*16.29 on which…: or, he leaned on them 30 And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines.
