1 Como é frágil o ser humano;

são bem poucos os seus dias e cheios de inquietação!

2 Desabrocha por um momento, como uma flor, e logo seca;

como a sombra fugitiva duma nuvem que o vento sopra,

também ele desaparece num instante.

3 Terás mesmo de ser assim tão áspero

para com os fracos humanos e trazê-los a julgamento?

4 Como podes pedir pureza a alguém que nasceu impuro?

5 Concedes ao ser humano um curto espaço de vida;

são apenas alguns meses que lhe dás,

sem possibilidade de ultrapassar o tempo que lhe foi atribuído!

6 Por isso, dá-lhe um pouco de descanso, peço-te.

Desvia a tua ira e permite que passe tranquilamente o seu dia,

como um trabalhador.

7 Até para uma árvore há esperança;

se lhe cortarem um ramo, ainda pode dar rebentos e florescer.

8 Mesmo quando as raízes começam a envelhecer, debaixo da terra,

e o caule fica menos tenro.

9 Ainda assim é capaz de se renovar, se for regada,

à semelhança duma planta nova.

10 Mas quando uma pessoa morre e a enterram,

dando o último suspiro o que fica dela?

11 Tal como a água que se evapora num mar,

ou como o ribeiro que seca e desaparece por falta de chuva,

12 assim o ser humano se deita pela última vez;

não se levantará mais,

senão quando já não existir o universo;

não se reerguerá antes,

não despertará do seu sono.

13 Oh! Se me escondesses no mundo dos mortos

e lá me deixasses esquecido,

até que a tua ira tivesse acabado

e tivesses um momento determinado

em que tornasses a lembrar-te de mim!

14 Se um indivíduo morre, voltará à vida?

Quanto a mim, esperarei por dias melhores,

até que seja liberto das minhas lutas e dificuldades.

15 Chamar-me-ias e eu te responderia;

recompensar-me-ias, pois me criaste.

16 Observarias todos os meus passos

e não tomarias em conta as minhas falhas.

17 Arquivarias o processo que serviria para me condenar.

18 Assim como as montanhas podem desfazer-se e desaparecer

e as rochas são arrancadas de seus lugares,

19 assim como a erosão da água sobre as rochas as desfaz em areia

e a sua força altera a superfície do solo,

da mesma forma tu destróis toda a esperança dos homens.

20 Fazes deles gente velha e enrugada

e depois manda-los embora.

21 Nunca chegam a saber se os seus filhos são honrados pela sociedade,

ou se antes se decaem e se arruínam.

22 Para eles há apenas tristeza e sofrimento."
