1 Jesus foi comer a casa de um dos líderes dos fariseus num certo sábado; e eles vigiavam-no, 2 para ver se curaria um dos presentes, que sofria de uma doença que o fazia inchar. 3 Então Jesus dirigiu-se aos fariseus e especialistas na Lei que se achavam em volta: "A Lei permite ou não curar um homem num dia de sábado?" 4 E visto que se recusavam a responder, Jesus, tomando o doente pela mão, curou-o e mandou-o embora. 5 Depois, voltando-se para eles disse: "Qual de vocês, que tivesse um filho ou um boi, e se este caísse num poço, não iria logo tirá-lo, num dia de sábado?" 6 Uma vez mais, não encontraram resposta que lhe dessem.

7 Quando reparou que todos os convidados procuravam o lugar de honra, perto do topo da mesa, contou-lhes a seguinte parábola: 8 "Se fores convidado para uma festa de casamento, não procures ocupar o melhor lugar, pois, se aparecer alguém de posição superior à tua, 9 o dono da casa levá-lo-á para o sítio onde te encontras sentado e dir-te-á: ‘Deixa que esta pessoa se sente no lugar em que estavas.’ E tu ficarás humilhado e terás de aceitar qualquer lugar que reste, ao fundo da mesa.

10 Em vez disso, começa pelo fim. E quando aquele que te convidou te vir, dirá: ‘Amigo, temos para ti um lugar melhor do que esse!’ E assim serás honrado perante todos os outros convidados! 11 Porque todo aquele que procura elevar-se será humilhado e todo aquele que se humilhar a si mesmo será elevado."

12 Voltou-se então para o seu hospedeiro: "Quando ofereceres um jantar, não convides amigos, irmãos, parentes e vizinhos ricos, porque esses retribuirão o convite. 13 Em vez disso, convida os pobres, os aleijados, os coxos e os cegos. 14 Na ressurreição dos justos Deus recompensar-te-á por teres convidado aqueles que não podem retribuir-te."

15 Ouvindo isto, alguém que estava à mesa com Jesus exclamou: "Feliz aquele que tiver o privilégio de cear no reino de Deus!" Ao que Jesus respondeu com a seguinte parábola:

16 "Um homem preparou uma grande festa e enviou muitos convites. 17 Chegada a hora do banquete, mandou o seu servo dizer aos convidados: ‘Venham, pois já está pronto.’ 18 Todos, porém, começaram com desculpas: um porque acabara de comprar um campo e queria vê-lo, pedindo, portanto, que dispensasse a sua presença. 19 Outro porque tinha acabado de comprar cinco juntas de bois e queria experimentá-los. 20 Outro ainda, porque acabara de casar-se, não podia ir.

21 O servo voltou e transmitiu ao seu senhor as respostas. Este, indignado, disse ao seu servo que fosse depressa pelas ruas e becos da cidade e convidasse os mendigos, paralíticos, coxos e cegos. 22 Ele foi e, mesmo assim, ainda havia lugar. 23 Então disse o senhor ao servo: ‘Vai por aí fora, pelos caminhos e por todos esses lugares; insiste para que venham, de modo que a casa fique cheia. 24 Quanto aos que primeiro convidei, ninguém provará dos manjares que eu tinha preparado!’ "

25 Grandes multidões seguiam Jesus, que lhes falou assim: 26 "Todo aquele que quiser ser meu seguidor e não odiar*14.26 O versículo Mt 10.37 mostra que "odiar", aqui, não tem um significado literal, mas que Jesus espera que quem o deseja seguir deve amá-lo mais a ele do que à própria família. o seu próprio pai, mãe, esposa, filhos, irmãos ou irmãs e a sua própria vida, não pode ser meu discípulo. 27 Quem não carregar a sua cruz para me seguir não pode ser meu discípulo.

28 Contudo, não deve começar a seguir-me enquanto não tiver pensado no custo que isso implica. Pois quem começaria a construir um edifício sem primeiro fazer cálculos e verificar se tem dinheiro suficiente para pagar as contas? 29 De outro modo, arriscar-se-ia a só poder lançar os alicerces, por se terem esgotado os recursos. 30 E então toda a gente troçaria dele! ‘Veem aquele homem?’, diriam então em tom de zombaria. ‘Começou uma casa e ficou sem dinheiro antes de a terminar!’

31 E qual é o rei que se dispõe a iniciar uma guerra sem primeiro consultar os seus conselheiros e verificar se com 10 000 homens terá força suficiente para derrotar os 20 000 que marcham contra ele? 32 E se vir que não, enquanto as tropas inimigas ainda vêm longe, enviará uma comissão de tréguas para discutir as condições de paz. 33 Semelhantemente, ninguém pode tornar-se meu discípulo sem ter primeiro calculado bem o que isso representa, e sem ter renunciado a tudo por amor a mim.

34 O sal é bom para temperar, mas se perder o sabor como pode tornar-se outra vez salgado? 35 O sal sem sabor não presta para nada, nem mesmo para adubo. É lançado fora. Quem tem ouvidos, ouça!"

1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. 2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? 4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; 5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? 6 And they could not answer him again to these things.

7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; 9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. 10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. 16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. 21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. 22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
