1 Num daqueles dias em que Jesus estava a ensinar o povo e a pregar o evangelho no templo, foi interrogado pelos principais sacerdotes, pelos especialistas na Lei e pelos anciãos. 2 Estes perguntavam-lhe: "Diz-nos com que autoridade fazes essas coisas. Quem te deu tal autoridade?"

3 Em resposta, Jesus retorquiu-lhes: "Também eu tenho uma pergunta para vos fazer. Ora digam-me: 4 O batismo de João é de inspiração celeste ou humana?"

5 Eles discutiram o caso entre si. "Se dissermos que é de inspiração celeste, ele perguntará: ‘Então porque não acreditaram nele?’ 6 Mas se dissermos que é de inspiração humana, todo o povo nos apedrejará, pois está convencido de que ele era um profeta." 7 Por fim, responderam: "Não sabemos!"

8 Jesus disse: "Então também não respondo à vossa pergunta!"

9 E começou a contar ao povo a seguinte parábola: "Um homem plantou uma vinha, arrendou-a a uns lavradores e partiu em viagem por longo tempo. 10 Na época devida, enviou um dos seus servos ir receber a sua parte da colheita da vinha. Os rendeiros, porém, espancaram-no e mandaram-no embora de mãos vazias. 11 Então enviou outro, mas espancaram-no e trataram-no mal; espancado e insultado, viu-se expulso sem nada receber. 12 Enviou ainda um terceiro homem; eles feriram-no e escorraçaram-no.

13 Dizia o dono da vinha: ‘Que farei agora? Vou enviar o meu filho querido; certamente hão de respeitá-lo.’

14 Mas quando os lavradores viram o filho, disseram: ‘Este é o herdeiro. Vamos matá-lo e a herança será nossa!’ 15 Arrastaram-no para fora da vinha e mataram-no. Que fará o dono da vinha? 16 Digo-vos que virá e matará os lavradores e arrendará a vinha a outros."

"Esses homens nunca fariam uma coisas dessas!", protestaram os ouvintes.

17 Jesus olhou-os e respondeu: "Então que quererão dizer as Escrituras ao afirmarem o sequinte?

‘A pedra que os construtores rejeitaram

veio a tornar-se a pedra fundamental do edifício!’*20.17 Sl 118.22.

18 Quem tropeçar nessa pedra será feito em pedaços e aqueles sobre quem ela cair serão esmagados."

19 Os especialistas na Lei e os principais sacerdotes procuraram prendê-lo nesse preciso momento, pois perceberam que aquela parábola se referia a eles. Mas tinham medo do povo.

20 Assim, mantinham-no sob vigilância. Acharam preferível levá-lo a dizer alguma coisa que servisse para se queixarem ao governador romano e fosse motivo para o prender. Enviaram pois delegados que se fingiam justos: 21 "Mestre, sabemos que ensinas com honestidade e que dizes a verdade sem temer o que os outros pensam, antes ensinas com fidelidade os caminhos de Deus. Ora explica-nos: 22 estará certo ou não pagarmos impostos a César?"

23 Vendo a sua astúcia, disse: 24 "Mostrem-me uma moeda. De quem é esta figura aqui? E a quem se refere a inscrição que está por baixo?" Responderam: "De César."

25 Jesus disse-lhes: "Sendo assim, deem a César o que é de César e a Deus o que é de Deus!" 26 Falhou assim aquela tentativa de o fazer tropeçar diante do povo. Maravilhados com a sua resposta, conservaram-se silenciosos.

27 Então alguns saduceus, um grupo de judeus que afirmavam não haver ressurreição, foram ter com Jesus e disseram-lhe: 28 "Mestre, Moisés deixou-nos uma Lei segundo a qual, quando um homem morre sem deixar filhos, o seu irmão deve casar com a viúva e gerar um filho, de modo a garantir descendência ao irmão defunto. 29 Ora, havia sete irmãos. O mais velho casou-se, morrendo sem deixar filhos. 30 O segundo irmão casou com a viúva, mas também ele morreu. Continuava a não haver descendência. 31 E assim por diante, um após outro, até que cada um dos sete tinha casado com ela e morrido sem deixar filhos. 32 Por fim, morreu também a mulher. 33 Portanto, de quem será ela esposa, uma vez que foi casada com todos os sete?"

34 Jesus respondeu: "O casamento é para as pessoas enquanto estão aqui na Terra. 35 Quando os que forem considerados dignos de ressuscitarem dentre os mortos forem para o céu não se casarão 36 e não podem morrer. São como os anjos e também são filhos de Deus, por terem renascido de entre os mortos para uma nova vida. 37 Quanto à vossa verdadeira pergunta, se se torna a viver ou não, até os escritos do próprio Moisés provam que sim, porque quando Deus lhe apareceu na sarça ardente, refere-se a si próprio como sendo ‘o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacob’.*20.37 Êx 3.6.38 Dizer que o Senhor é o Deus de alguém significa que essa pessoa está viva e não morta! Assim, aos olhos de Deus, eles estão vivos."

39 "Bem respondido!", comentaram alguns dos especialistas na Lei judaica que se encontravam ali. 40 E isto pôs fim às suas tentativas, porque não se atreviam a perguntar-lhe mais nada.

41 Depois foi Jesus quem lhes fez uma pergunta. "Porque será que se diz que Cristo é descendente de David? 42 Pois o próprio David escreveu no Livro dos Salmos:

‘Disse o Senhor ao meu Senhor:

"Senta-te à minha direita,

43 até que ponha os teus inimigos debaixo dos teus pés." ’*20.43 Sl 110.1.

44 Uma vez que David lhe chamou Senhor, como pode ser seu filho?"

45 Então com a multidão a escutar, voltou-se para os discípulos e disse: 46 "Ponham-se em guarda contra os especialistas na Lei, desejosos de pavonear-se em trajes dignos e gostando de receber as saudações nas praças, e de ter os assentos presidenciais nas sinagogas e os lugares de honra nos banquetes; 47 que roubam as casas das viúvas e se cobrem para fazer longas orações. Estes receberão um castigo ainda maior."

1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, 2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? 3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? 5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? 6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. 7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. 8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. 9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. 11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. 12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. 13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. 14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? 16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. 17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? 18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. 20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. 21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no? 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? 24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cæsar’s. 25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which be Cæsar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s. 26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, 28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. 31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. 34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. 41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
