1 Nadabe e Abiú, filhos de Aarão, tomaram cada um o seu incensário, puseram-lhe fogo e incenso sobre ele, trazendo fogo estranho perante o Senhor, contrariamente àquilo que o ele expressamente ordenara. 2 Então saiu fogo da presença do Senhor que os consumiu.

3 Moisés disse a Aarão: "Foi isto mesmo que o Senhor disse:

‘Darei prova da minha santidade,

através daqueles que se aproximam de mim,

e serei glorificado assim perante todo o povo.’ "

Porém, Aarão guardou silêncio.

4 Moisés chamou então Misael e Elzafã, primos de Aarão, filhos de Uziel, e disse-lhes: "Vão buscar os corpos que estão diante do santuário e levem-nos para fora do acampamento." 5 E assim fizeram e levaram-nos, mesmo nas túnicas com que estavam, tal como Moisés lhes dissera.

6 Então Moisés disse a Aarão e aos seus filhos Eleazar e Itamar: "Não descubram as vossas cabeças, em sinal de contrição, nem rasguem as vossas roupas, para que não venham a morrer também, e a ira do Senhor não venha a este povo de Israel. No entanto, o resto do povo pode lamentar todo este terrível fogo que o Senhor mandou. 7 Vocês, contudo, não devem afastar-se da tenda do encontro, sob pena de morrer, pois o azeite da unção do Senhor está sobre vós." Eles assim fizeram como Moisés lhes disse.

8 O Senhor disse mais o seguinte a Aarão: 9 "Não bebam nunca vinho nem bebida forte quando entrarem na tenda do encontro, se não morrerão. Esta regra aplicar-se-á a vocês e a todos os vossos descendentes, em todas as gerações vindouras. 10 O vosso dever é ensinar o povo, mostrar-lhe qual a diferença entre o santo e o profano, o puro e o impuro; 11 ensinar-lhe todas as leis que o Senhor tem dado por intermédio de Moisés."

12 Moisés disse a Aarão e aos filhos que lhe ficaram, Eleazar e Itamar: "Tomem a oferta de cereais, o que ficou depois de ter oferecido ao Senhor aquela mão-cheia que foi queimada sobre o altar, certifiquem-se que não há nela fermento e comam-na junto do altar, num lugar sagrado; trata-se de uma oferta santíssima. 13 Por isso, devem comê-la num lugar santo. É uma porção que vos pertence a ti e a teus filhos, essa parte das ofertas ao Senhor feitas com fogo. Assim me foi ordenado. 14 Mas o peito e a coxa, que foram oferecidas ao Senhor com um movimento balanceado, um gesto de apresentação cerimonial, na sua presença, podem comer num lugar limpo cerimonialmente. É um alimento que vos é destinado; a ti, aos teus filhos e filhas. É a porção que vos pertence dos sacrifícios de paz que faz o povo de Israel. 15 O povo deverá trazer a coxa, que foi posta de parte, mais o peito que foi oferecido quando a gordura se queimava, e deverão apresentá-los ao Senhor com um gesto de apresentação cerimonial. Depois então vos pertencerão, a ti e à tua família, tal como o Senhor tem ordenado."

16 Moisés procurou por toda a parte o bode da oferta pelo pecado e descobriu que tinha sido queimado. Por isso, ficou muito zangado com Eleazar e com Itamar, os filhos que restaram a Aarão. 17 "Porque não comeram vocês a oferta pelo pecado no santuário, visto que é coisa santíssima? Deus vo-la deu para que levassem a iniquidade e a culpa do povo, para fazer expiação por eles perante o Senhor!", disse-lhes. 18 "Visto que o sangue não foi levado para dentro do santuário, deveriam tê-la comido ali tal como vos mandei."

19 Aarão intercedeu junto de Moisés: "Eles ofereceram a sua oferta de expiação do pecado e o seu holocausto perante o Senhor", disse. "Poderia eu comer a expiação pelo pecado num dia como este? Teria isso agradado ao Senhor?"

20 Moisés, ouvindo isto, ficou de acordo.

1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. 2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

3 Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. 4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. 5 So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said. 6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. 7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

8 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying, 9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: 10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; 11 And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

12 And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy: 13 And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons’ due, of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire: for so I am commanded. 14 And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons’ due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel. 15 The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons’ with thee, by a statute for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.

16 And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying, 17 Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded. 19 And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD? 20 And when Moses heard that, he was content.
