1,2 Ouçam, ó sacerdotes, este aviso que vos dá o Senhor dos exércitos! Se não modificarem a vossa conduta e não derem glória ao meu nome, mandar-vos-ei uma terrível punição. Em vez de vos dar bênção, como gostaria de fazer, voltar-me-ei contra vocês com maldição. Na verdade, até já vos amaldiçoei, porque não levaram a sério as coisas que reputo por importantes.

3 Repreenderei os vossos filhos e espalharei sobre as vossas faces o esterco desses animais que me oferecem. Afastar-vos-ei como se faz ao estrume. 4 Por fim, saberão que fui eu quem vos mandou este aviso, a fim de que a minha aliança com Levi permaneça, diz o Senhor dos exércitos. 5 A minha aliança com Levi era dar vida e paz, e mostrar reverência e temor. E ele, na verdade, temeu o meu santo nome. 6 Ele passou ao povo toda a verdade que recebeu de mim. Não mentiu, não enganou; andou na minha presença, vivendo de forma justa e reta, desviando muitos dos caminhos do pecado.

7 Dos lábios dos sacerdotes deveria escorrer o conhecimento de Deus, de forma a que o povo aprendesse a Lei do Senhor. Os sacerdotes são mensageiros do Senhor dos exércitos; os homens deveriam vir ter com eles para receberem diretivas. 8 Mas não é assim que vocês fazem! Abandonaram os caminhos de Deus. As vossas diretivas levaram muitos a cair em pecado. Distorceram a aliança com Levi e tornaram-na numa farsa grotesca, diz o Senhor dos exércitos. 9 Por isso, vos fiz desprezíveis aos olhos do povo todo; porque não quiseram obedecer-me; usaram de parcialidade com os vossos favoritos que quebraram a Lei sem serem castigados."

10 Somos filhos do mesmo pai, Abraão; fomos criados pelo mesmo Deus. Apesar disso, somos desleais uns com os outros, violando a aliança que os nossos pais celebraram!

11 O povo de Judá foi infiel a Deus e cometeram-se ações horríveis em Jerusalém e em Israel. Desrespeitaram o santuário que o Senhor tanto ama; casaram-se com mulheres gentias adoradoras de ídolos. 12 Que o Senhor elimine completamente das tendas de Jacob todos aqueles, sacerdotes ou não, que tenham feito tal coisa, mesmo que tenham apresentado ofertas ao Senhor dos exércitos!

13 E ainda cobrem o altar com lágrimas, porque o Senhor não dá mais atenção às vossas ofertas, e não recebem dele nenhuma bênção. 14 "Porque é que nos abandonou?", gritam vocês. Dir-vos-ei porquê. É porque o Senhor tem sido testemunha da vossa deslealdade para com as mulheres que vos tinham sido fiéis ao longo dos anos, as companheiras a quem prometeram cuidados e fidelidade, pois eram as mulheres da tua aliança. 15 Nos justos planos de Deus, quando casaram, os dois tornaram-se num só, aos seus olhos. E porquê? Para que os filhos nascidos da vossa união andem nos seus caminhos. Por isso, guardem as vossas paixonetas! Sejam fiéis à mulher da vossa mocidade! 16 Porque eu, o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, repudio o divórcio assim como aquele que se cobre de violência como duma roupa. Portanto, tenham cuidado e não sejam infiéis às vossas mulheres, diz o Senhor dos exércitos!

17 Têm desgostado o Senhor com as vossas palavras.

"Desgostado, nós? Como é que o desgostámos?"

Quando dizem que praticar o mal, aos olhos do Senhor, vem a dar no mesmo que praticar o bem, e que é dos que fazem o mal que o Senhor, no fundo, se agrada. E ainda dizem: "Onde está o Deus da justiça?"

10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.*2.11 loved: or, ought to love 12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.*2.12 the master…: or, him that waketh, and him that answereth 13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. 17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
