1 Um dia, Coré, filho de Izar, neto de Coate e descendente de Levi, foi ter com Datã e Abirão, filhos de Eliabe, e ainda com Om, filho de Pelete, estes três últimos da tribo de Rúben, 2 e conspiraram juntos, incitando uma quantidade de gente à revolta contra Moisés. Estiveram envolvidos 250 homens, com responsabilidades na chefia do povo.

3 Foram ter com Moisés e com Aarão e disseram-lhes: "Já chega da vossa presunção. Vocês não são melhores do que qualquer outro. Todos em Israel são uma nação santa para o Senhor e ele está com cada um de nós. Que direito têm vocês de se porem em evidência, clamando que devemos obedecer-vos e fazer tudo como se fossem maiores do que qualquer um entre todo este povo do Senhor?"

4 Quando Moisés ouviu isto caiu com o rosto em terra. 5 E disse a Coré e aos que estavam com ele: "Pela manhã o Senhor vos mostrará quem é seu, quem é santo e quem é que ele escolheu para se aproximar dele. 6 Façam isto: Tu, Coré, e os que estão contigo, tomem incensários; 7 acendam-nos e deitem-lhes incenso perante o Senhor amanhã de manhã; veremos quem o Senhor escolheu; esse será o consagrado. Já chega da vossa presunção, filhos de Levi!"

8 Moisés disse ainda mais isto a Coré: 9 "Parece-vos então pouca coisa que o Deus de Israel vos tenha escolhido de entre todo o povo de Israel para estarem junto dele, trabalhando no tabernáculo do Senhor, apresentando-se perante o povo para os servir no culto? 10 Será que de nada vale que vos tenha dado esta tarefa só a vocês, os levitas? E agora pretendem também o sacerdócio? 11 Porque é isto, afinal, que vocês realmente procuram! É por isso que se revoltam contra Senhor! Que vos fez Aarão para não estarem satisfeitos com ele?"

12 Moisés mandou ainda chamar Datã e Abirão, os filhos de Eliabe, mas eles recusaram vir. 13 "E tu também achas pouco", retorquiram com azedume, "que nos tenhas tirado duma terra onde jorra leite e mel, para nos matares aqui neste deserto terrível, e que queiras agora tornar-te nosso rei? 14 Para além disso, nunca chegaste a levar-nos para a tal bela terra que nos prometeste, onde jorra leite e mel, nem nos deste campos e vinhas por herança. Quem queres tu enganar? Não, não vamos ter contigo!"

15 Moisés estava extremamente indignado e disse ao Senhor: "Não aceites os seus sacrifícios! Tu sabes que nunca tirei um só jumento que fosse deles, que nunca os prejudiquei."

16 E disse a Coré: "Vem aqui amanhã à presença do Senhor com os que te acompanham. Aarão estará também aqui. 17 Não se esqueçam de trazer os vossos incensários e o incenso; um incensário para cada um, ou seja, 250 ao todo. Aarão trará também o seu."

18 Eles assim fizeram. Vieram com os incensários, acenderam-nos, puseram-lhes o incenso e colocaram-se à entrada da tenda do encontro, com Moisés e com Aarão. 19 Entretanto, Coré já tinha sublevado toda a nação contra Moisés e Aarão, pelo que toda a gente se juntou para ver. Então a glória do Senhor apareceu a todo o povo, 20 e o Senhor disse a Moisés e a Aarão: 21 "Afasta-te dessa multidão, para que possa destruí-los num instante!"

22 Mas Moisés e Aarão caíram com os seus rostos em terra: "Ó Deus, Deus de toda a humanidade", rogaram, "deverá a tua cólera cair sobre todos, quando afinal o pecado foi de um só?"

23 Então o Senhor respondeu-lhe: 24 "Diz ao povo que se afaste das tendas de Coré, Datã e Abirão."

25 Moisés correu para as tendas deles, seguido de perto pelos anciãos de Israel. 26 "Depressa", gritou para o povo, "afastem-se das tendas destes homens malvados, e nem sequer toquem seja no que seja que lhes pertença, para que não se identifiquem com os seus pecados e sejam destruídos com eles!"

27 O povo afastou-se das tendas dos três homens indicados. Datã e Abirão saíram das suas tendas e ficaram de pé, à entrada, juntamente com as mulheres, os filhos e as criancinhas.

28 Moisés disse: "Agora hão de ver que foi o Senhor quem mandou fazer tudo o que eu fiz; que não foi por minha própria vontade. 29 Se estas pessoas morrerem de morte natural, ou por algum mero acidente ou por doença, então o Senhor não me enviou. 30 Mas se o Senhor fizer um milagre, e se o chão se abrir e os tragar, a eles assim como tudo o que lhes pertence, e descerem vivos ao mundo dos mortos*16.30 No hebraico, Sheol, é traduzido, ao longo do livro, por mundo dos mortos. Segundo o pensamento hebraico do Antigo Testamento, é o lugar dos mortos, mas não necessariamente como um sepulcro ou sepultura, que é um lugar de morte e definhamento, mas sim um lugar de existência consciente, embora sombria e infeliz., então ficarão a saber dessa forma que estes homens rejeitaram o Senhor."

31 Mal tinha acabado de dizer isto quando o chão se abriu de repente debaixo deles, 32 e uma grande fenda os tragou, juntamente com as tendas, as suas famílias e amigos que estavam com eles, além de todas as coisas que eram deles. 33 Foram sepultados vivos e a terra fechou-se de novo sobre eles. Morreram portanto dessa forma. 34 Todo o povo de Israel fugira com os gritos, temendo serem também tragados pela terra.

35 A seguir, veio fogo do céu, da parte de Senhor, e queimou os 250 homens que ofereciam incenso.

36 O Senhor disse a Moisés: 37 "Diz a Eleazar, filho de Aarão, o sacerdote, que tire esses incensários do fogo; porque são santos, foram dedicados a mim. 38 Deverá também espalhar o incenso que arde nos incensários daqueles homens que pecaram, e que por isso perderam a vida. Com os incensários façam chapas e estendam-nas sobre o altar, visto que os incensários são santos por terem sido usados perante o Senhor. Essas chapas no altar servirão de lembrança ao povo de Israel."

39 Eleazar o sacerdote pegou então nos 250 incensários de bronze e fez com eles folhas de metal para cobrir o altar, 40 para que o povo de Israel não se esquecesse mais de que ninguém está autorizado, ninguém que não seja descendente de Aarão, a vir perante o Senhor queimar incenso, sob o risco de lhe acontecer a mesma coisa que a Coré e aos seus seguidores. Assim foram cumpridas as direções dadas a Moisés pelo Senhor.

41 No entanto, logo na manhã seguinte, todo o povo começou de novo a murmurar contra Moisés e Aarão dizendo: "Mataram o povo do Senhor!" 42 Em breve começou a formar-se um grande levantamento. A certa altura, dirigiram-se contra a tenda do encontro e logo apareceu a nuvem; e toda a gente viu a tremenda glória do Senhor.

43 Moisés e Aarão chegaram-se, puseram-se à entrada da tenda do encontro, 44 e o Senhor disse a Moisés: 45 "Afasta-te desse povo, para que possa destruí-los já."

Mas ambos caíram com os rostos em terra. 46 E Moisés disse a Aarão: "Depressa, traz um incensário, acende-o com fogo do altar, põe nele incenso e leva-o rapidamente pelo meio do povo para fazer expiação por eles; porque já a cólera do Senhor está a atuar; a praga já começou a atingi-los!"

47 Aarão fez como Moisés lhe dissera; correu por entre o povo, visto que se estava a espalhar a praga, e com o incenso no incensário fez expiação por eles. 48 Colocou-se entre os mortos e os vivos e a praga cessou; 49 contudo ainda morreram 14 700 pessoas, além das que tinham perecido antes, aquando da rebelião de Coré. 50 Então Aarão regressou até junto de Moisés à entrada da tenda do encontro. Foi assim que a praga terminou.

1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: 2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown: 3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?*16.3 Ye take…: Heb. It is much for you 4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face: 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him. 6 This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company; 7 And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them? 10 And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also? 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up: 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us? 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.*16.14 put…: Heb. bore out 15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them. 16 And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow: 17 And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer. 18 And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron. 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. 22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

23 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 24 Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children. 28 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind. 29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.*16.29 the common…: Heb. as every man dieth 30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.*16.30 make…: Heb. create a creature

31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

35 And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

36 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed. 38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel. 39 And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar: 40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.

41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD. 42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. 43 And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.

44 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun. 47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.
