1 Assim como é um absurdo neve no verão,

e nunca se espera que chova durante as colheitas,

assim também a honra não é coisa que possa condizer com loucos.

2 Uma maldição lançada sem motivo justo

é como um pardal ou uma andorinha volteando no ar,

sem procurar atingir um objetivo preciso.

3 Os cavalos dominam-se com chicote, os jumentos com freio,

os insensatos com uma vara nas costas.

4 Se responderes a um louco de acordo com a sua loucura,

arriscas-te a pareceres tão doido como ele.

5 Mas responde ao insensato segundo as suas loucuras,

para que ele não pense que é sensato.

6 Mandar uma mensagem por um insensato

é como ficar sem pernas ou beber veneno.

7 Um provérbio na boca de um insensato

vale tanto como as pernas de um paralítico.

8 Como atar uma pedra a uma funda,

assim é o dar honra a um insensato.

9 Como um pequeno espinho que se crava na mão dum bêbedo,

assim é um provérbio na boca dum insensato,

pois não lhe sente a força.

10 Quem dá emprego a um insensato, ou a um desconhecido que passa,

é como um arqueiro que dispara ao acaso e a todos fere.

11 Como um cachorro que volta a farejar o que vomitou,

assim é o insensato que anda sempre a repetir as mesmas asneiras.

12 Há mais esperança para o insensato

do que para o indivíduo que está cheio de si mesmo.

13 Diz o preguiçoso: "Não posso sair,

porque anda à solta um animal feroz, anda um leão na rua."

14 Revolve-se na cama, pesadamente,

como um velho portão nos seus gonzos.

15 Há pessoas tão preguiçosas

que até lhes custa levar a mão à boca para comer!

16 No entanto, têm-se por tão inteligentes,

como sete professores juntos.

17 Quem se mete numa discussão que não é da sua conta

é como se pegasse num cão pelas orelhas.

18 Como um demente com uma arma na mão,

lançando a morte à sua volta,

19 assim é o indivíduo que conta uma mentira a outro e depois diz:

"Foi só por brincadeira!"

20 Sem lenha, o fogo acaba por apagar-se;

também sem a difamação acabam as contendas.

21 Assim como o carvão ou a lenha são bons para acender o fogo,

da mesma forma, um indivíduo conflituoso é capaz de levantar uma briga.

22 A tagarelice é para um intriguista,

como um petisco apetitoso que lhe consola o íntimo.

23 Belas palavras podem, por vezes, encobrir um coração maligno,

tal como um esplêndido esmalte pode revestir um vaso de metal ordinário.

24 Uma pessoa com ódio no coração

pode ser capaz de falar com muita amabilidade,

mas não é de fiar, porque no seu interior esconde a falsidade;

25 Não lhe dês ouvidos,

mesmo que venha suplicar-te algo, em tom comovido,

porque há sete abominações no seu coração.

26 Por muito que dissimule o que lhe vai na alma,

um dia toda a gente virá a conhecê-lo bem.

27 Quem prepara uma cilada contra outros, virá a cair nela;

ao pretender rolar uma pedra contra alguém,

esta acabará por esmagá-lo.

28 A língua mentirosa odeia aqueles a quem engana;

uma língua lisonjeira só serve para trazer ruína.
