1 Submetam-se todos aos poderes instituídos. Porque a autoridade que possuem é-vos concedida por Deus. 2 Por isso, os que se recusam obedecer às leis do país revoltam-se contra uma ordem que Deus estabeleceu, e trarão sobre si o seu juízo. 3 Porque os líderes não metem medo a quem faça o bem, mas sim a quem pratica o mal. Portanto, se não quiseres ter nada a temer dos líderes, faz o bem e terás o elogio das autoridades. 4 A autoridade está ao serviço dessa ordem instituída por Deus, que existe para teu bem. Mas se fizeres algo de condenável, então com razão terás que recear, pois é portadora de espada, sinal de poder para punir. Deus a instituiu para esse exato fim, de castigar quem pratica o mal. 5 Portanto, deves obedecer às autoridades por duas razões: para evitares ser castigado e para teres uma consciência limpa.

6 Pelas mesmas razões, também devem pagar os impostos, porque as autoridades estão ao serviço de Deus, de quem receberam a missão de zelar pela sua cobrança. 7 Devem pois dar a cada um o que é devido: os impostos e as contribuições a quem tem o direito de os exigir, o respeito e honra a quem os deve receber.

8 Não contraiam dívidas com ninguém, a não ser a dívida do amor uns para com os outros; porque quem ama os outros satisfaz naturalmente todas as exigências da Lei. 9 Com efeito, não adulteres, não mates, não roubes, não cobices o que é do próximo. Na verdade, qualquer outro mandamento se resume num só mandamento: "Ama o teu próximo como a ti mesmo."*13.9 Êx 20.13-15, 17; Dt 5.17-19, 21.10 O amor ao próximo não prejudica ninguém. É essa a razão pela qual ele satisfaz toda a Lei de Deus.

11 Digo-vos isto tudo porque sabemos o tempo em que vivemos. Despertemos, porque a hora da vinda do nosso Salvador está agora já mais próxima do que na altura em que cremos. 12 A noite está a passar e o dia do seu regresso começa a despontar. Eis porque devemos abandonar as obras más das trevas e armar-nos de uma vida reta, como é próprio de quem vive na luz. 13 Sejam honestos e verdadeiros em tudo o que fizerem, como é próprio de quem vive de dia, para que toda a gente aprove a vossa conduta. Não se metam em festanças, rejeitem as bebedeiras e tudo em que reine a imoralidade, o adultério, ou ainda as rivalidades e a inveja. 14 Devem revestir-se da vida nova do Senhor Jesus Cristo e não pensem de maneira a dar lugar aos vossos maus desejos.

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. 6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. 8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
