1 Digo a verdade em Cristo, não estou a mentir. A minha consciência é minha testemunha e o Espírito Santo o confirma. 2 O meu coração está profundamente abatido dentro de mim e entristeço dia após dia. 3 Pois eu até preferia ser separado de Cristo, se isso pudesse ser condição para a salvação dos meus irmãos, da gente do meu povo. 4 Eles são os Israelitas. Deus adotou-os como filhos e revelou-lhes a sua glória. Com eles fez alianças e deu-lhes a sua Lei; ensinou-os a adorá-lo e deu-lhes promessas. 5 A este povo pertencem os patriarcas e o próprio Cristo, no que diz respeito à sua natureza humana, ele que é Deus sobre tudo, para sempre louvado! Amém!

6 Pois bem, terá Deus falhado no cumprimento da sua promessa aos judeus? Naturalmente que não! O que acontece é que nem todos os que descendem de Israel pertencem a Israel. 7 O simples facto de serem da descendência de Abraão não os torna filhos de Abraão. As Escrituras dizem: "Só através de Isaque é que a minha promessa terá cumprimento",*9.7 Gn 21.12. embora Abraão tivesse outros filhos.

8 Isto significa que nem todos os filhos de Abraão são necessariamente filhos de Deus. São os filhos da promessa que são considerados filhos de Abraão. 9 Porque Deus prometeu: "No próximo ano virei e Sara terá um filho."*9.9 Gn 18.10.

10 Não foi caso único. Este filho é Isaque, nosso pai. A sua mulher, Rebeca, estava para ter dois gémeos. 11 Ainda antes que as crianças tivessem nascido e feito fosse o que fosse, bem ou mal, e para que o propósito de Deus prevalecesse, na escolha que ele próprio fez, 12 sem depender de obras, mas daquele que chama, foi dito a Rebeca: "o mais velho terá de submeter-se ao mais novo."*9.12 Gn 25.23.13 Como está escrito:

"Mostrei-vos o meu amor amando o vosso pai Jacob.

Rejeitei o seu próprio irmão Esaú."*9.13 Ml 1.2-3.

14 Haverá então injustiça da parte de Deus? Claro que não! 15 Porque Deus tinha dito a Moisés:

"Terei compaixão de quem eu quiser

e serei misericordioso para com quem eu entender."*9.15 Êx 33.19.

16 Assim pois as bênçãos de Deus não são dadas só porque alguém decide recebê-las, ou porque tenha feito muitas obras para as alcançar. Elas dependem de Deus que tem misericórdia de quem quiser.

17 O Faraó, o rei do Egito, é um exemplo desse facto. Deus disse: "Para isto te levantei como rei do Egito, para por ti mostrar o meu poder, a fim de que em toda a Terra seja honrado o meu nome."*9.17 Êx 9.16.18 Como veem, Deus é benigno para com uns, mas endurece o coração de outros, conforme a sua vontade.

19 Bem, podem perguntar: "Por que razão Deus culpa as pessoas por não o ouvirem? Não estão elas a fazer simplesmente o que ele manda?" 20 Não, não digam isso! Quem é o homem, um pobre mortal, para criticar Deus? Um objeto fabricado dirá àquele que o fabricou: "Porque me fizeste desta forma?"*9.20 Is 29.16; 45.9.21 Quando um oleiro faz um jarro de barro não terá o direito de usar o mesmo barro para fazer um belo objeto de ornamentação e um outro para uso corrente? 22 Então não teria Deus o direito de manifestar a sua cólera e dar a conhecer o seu poder contra aqueles que estão debaixo da sua cólera e que se encaminham para a perdição, mas cuja maldade ele tem suportado com paciência? 23 Ele fez isto para dar a conhecer as riquezas da sua glória àqueles de quem ele tem misericórdia e que ele previamente preparou para receberem a sua glória. 24 Somos nós aqueles que ele chamou, quer sejamos judeus ou gentios.

25 Lembram-se do que está escrito no profeta Oseias:

"Direi àqueles que não são meus: agora são meu povo;

e amarei aqueles que estavam fora do meu amor"?*9.25 Os 2.23.

26 E diz ainda:

"Em vez de lhes dizer: ‘Não são meu povo’,

serão chamados ‘filhos do Deus vivo.’ "*9.26 Os 1.10.

27 E Isaías, o profeta, proclamava, acerca de Israel:

"Ainda que o número dos filhos de Israel

seja como a areia das praias,

apenas um pequeno número será salvo.

28 Porque o Senhor dará execução à sua palavra na Terra,

de uma forma integral,

e no seu devido momento, sem alterações."*9.28 Is 10.22, 23.

29 E noutro lugar o mesmo profeta já havia dito:

"Se não fosse a misericórdia do Senhor dos exércitos,

poupando descendência, teríamos sido destruídos,

tal como aconteceu com as cidades de Sodoma e Gomorra."*9.29 Is 1.9.

30 Que diremos então destas coisas? Só isto: que Deus deu a justiça aos gentios, que antes não procuravam a justiça. E foi uma justiça obtida pela fé. 31 Israel, que tinha procurado observar a Lei de Deus, não conseguiu fazê-lo. 32 E porque não? Porque tentava ser salvo através do cumprimento da Lei, em vez de fazer depender da fé a sua salvação. Tropeçou na pedra 33 de que fala a Escritura:

"Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra de tropeço,

e uma rocha que os fará cair.

Aquele que nele crer não será envergonhado."*9.33 Is 8.14; 28.16.

6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. 10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. 27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. 30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. 31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
