1 Depois Noemi disse a Rute: "Minha filha, não será tempo de tentar encontrar-te um marido e de seres feliz? 2 Tenho estado a pensar em Boaz; além disso é nosso parente. Eu sei que esta noite ele vai estar a peneirar a cevada na eira. 3 Por isso, faz o que eu te digo: lava-te, perfuma-te, arranja-te bem e vai lá à eira, mas de modo que ele não te veja antes de ter acabado de jantar. 4 Repara onde se vai deitar e depois levanta-lhe a manta e deita-te aos pés dele. Ele próprio te dirá o que deves fazer."

5 "Está bem. Vou fazer como me disseste." 6 E foi à eira nessa noite, seguindo as instruções da sogra.

7 Depois de ter acabado de comer, Boaz deitou-se satisfeito ao pé dum feixe e adormeceu. Então Rute veio sem fazer barulho, levantou a ponta da manta aos pés, e deitou-se. 8 De repente, por volta da meia noite, ele despertou e sentou-se admirado. Havia uma mulher deitada aos seus pés! 9 "Quem és tu?" "Sou eu, senhor, sou Rute. Faz de mim tua mulher, de acordo com as leis de Deus, pois és o nosso parente mais chegado."

10 "Que o Senhor te abençoe!", exclamou ele. "Pois estás a ser ainda mais bondosa para com Noemi do que já tens sido. Seria natural que preferisses um rapaz novo, pobre ou rico. 11 Não te preocupes com mais nada, minha filha. Eu tratarei de todos os detalhes referentes a esse assunto, pois todas as pessoas na cidade sabem bem a mulher virtuosa que és. 12 É verdade que sou vosso parente próximo, no entanto, existe um outro que é ainda mais próximo do que eu. 13 Fica aqui esta noite e pela manhã irei falar-lhe. Se ele quiser casar contigo, está certo; caso contrário, tão certo como vive o Senhor, que serás minha mulher. Fica aqui até de manhã."

14 Ela ficou ali deitada aos seus pés até de madrugada. Logo cedo, antes que o dia rompesse, levantou-se e foi-se embora, porque tinha-lhe dito: "Que não se venha a saber que uma mulher esteve aqui na eira." 15 Disse-lhe ainda, "Dá-me o teu manto." E deitou-lhe dentro seis medidas de cevada, como presente para a sogra, ajudando-a a pô-lo às costas.

16 Ela regressou à cidade. "Então, como foi que se passou tudo, minha filha?", perguntou-lhe Noemi, quando a jovem chegou a casa. Rute contou-lhe 17 e deu-lhe a cevada da parte de Boaz, sublinhando o facto de Boaz não querer deixá-la regressar sem um presente.

18 Noemi disse-lhe: "Tem paciência até vermos o que acontece, pois Boaz não é homem para descansar enquanto não tiver levado a bom termo o seu intento. Vais ver que hoje mesmo tratará de tudo."

1 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? 2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor. 3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. 4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.*3.4 uncover: or, lift up the clothes that are on 5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.*3.8 turned: or, took hold on 9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.*3.9 a near…: or, one that hath right to redeem 10 And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.*3.11 city: Heb. gate 12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. 13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

14 And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15 Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.*3.15 vail: or, sheet, or, apron 16 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. 18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
