1 Donde vêm as guerras e os conflitos entre vocês? Não vêm justamente das paixões que no vosso ser se confrontam? 2 Cobiçam, mas não alcançam. Matam e desejam o que os outros têm, mas que não conseguem obtê-lo. Daí as lutas e as guerras. Não têm porque não pedem a Deus. 3 Ou então, quando pedem, não recebem, porque fazem-no com más intenções; pedem com o fim de satisfazer os vossos apetites.

4 Vocês são desleais como adúlteros! Não veem que gostar do mundo é estar contra Deus? Quem quiser ser amigo do mundo torna-se inimigo de Deus. 5 Ou julgam sem razão aquela escritura que diz que o espírito que ele colocou dentro de nós tem ciúmes? 6 Por isso, tanto maior é o seu auxílio. E também está escrito que "Deus opõe-se aos orgulhosos, mas favorece os humildes."*4.6 Pv 3.34.

7 Sujeitem-se pois a Deus, resistam ao Diabo e ele fugirá de vocês. 8 Cheguem-se a Deus e ele se chegará a vocês. Lavem as mãos da maldade, pecadores! E aqueles cuja vida não está decididamente com Deus, revejam os vossos intentos. 9 Pensem na vossa miséria moral e lamentem o que fizeram, arrependidos. Que o vosso riso se transforme em tristeza e a vossa alegria em choro. 10 Humilhem-se perante o Senhor que ele vos elevará.

11 Irmãos, não falem mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal de um irmão é como se fosse seu juiz. Coloca-se no lugar da Lei e está também a criticá-la. E se criticas a Lei, já não estás a segui-la, mas a substituí-la como juiz. 12 Só Deus, que fez a Lei, tem poder para nos julgar, para nos salvar ou para nos condenar. Portanto, quem és tu que julgas o teu próximo?

13 E quanto àqueles que dizem: "Hoje ou amanhã iremos a tal e tal sítio e aí passaremos um tempo, e negociaremos e ganharemos", 14 como é que sabem o que vai acontecer amanhã? A vossa vida não passa de um vapor que se forma e logo se esvai. 15 O que deveriam dizer é: "Se o Senhor quiser, e se estivermos vivos, haveremos de fazer isto e aquilo." 16 Em vez disso, continuam a orgulhar-se das vossas capacidades, esquecendo-se de que essa segurança orgulhosa é um mal.

17 Quem sabe fazer o bem e não o pratica está a pecar.

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
