1 Enquanto viviam em Nazaré, João Baptista começou a pregar no deserto da Judeia:o

2 Arrependam-se! O reino dos céus está próximo!

4 O vestuário de João era feito de pêlo de camelo, e usava também um cinto de couro; o seu alimento consistia em gafanhotos e mel silvestre. Gente de Jerusalém e de todo o vale do Jordão, e até de todas as partes da Judeia, vinham ao deserto para o ouvir pregar.

6 Confessavam os seus pecados, e João baptizava-os no rio Jordão.

1 Then Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tried by the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he afterward was hungry.

3 And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, say that these stones may become bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man will not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil takes him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

6 and says to him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down: for it is written, He will give his angels charge concerning you: and, On their hands they will bear you up, Lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.
