1 THERE was a certain man sick \'97 Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.

2 It was that Mary who anointed the Master with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick.

3 So the sisters sent to Jesus, saying, "Master, he whom you love is sick."

4 When Jesus heard it he said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it."

5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed where he was two days.

7 Then, after that, he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judaea again."

8 The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, just now the Jews were trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"

9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

10 But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him."

11 He said this, and then he said to them, "Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him."

12 The disciples said to him, "Master, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13 But Jesus had spoken of his death. They thought that he was speaking of the repose of sleep.

14 Then Jesus said to them frankly, "Lazarus has died,
