41 His parents used to go up every year to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover.42 When he had reached the age of twelve years, and they had gone up according to the custom of the feast43 and had completed the days and were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But his parents did not know it.44 Thinking that he was in the company, they went a day's journey. But when they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances45 and did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem searching for him.46 On the third day they found him in the Temple courts, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.47 All who heard him were astonished at his understanding and his answers.48 When his parents saw him, they were amazed, and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us so? See, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress."49 He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be at my Father's?"50 They did not understand the words that he spoke.51 Then he went down with them, and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these sayings in her heart.52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and in height and in favor with God and with men.
