1 In dieser Zeit fing so ein Typ mit dem Namen ‚Johannes, der die Leute tauft‘ an, in der Wüste ziemlich krasse Sachen zu sagen. Sein Lieblingsthema war dabei:

2 „Lebt nicht weiter so wie bisher! Rennt nicht in euren Untergang. Schlagt einen neuen Weg ein, denn jetzt geht’s ab! Gott wird bald das Sagen haben!"

3 Schon der Prophet Jesaja hatte krasse Ansage gemacht: „Da macht jemand in der Wüste den Lauten und ruft: ‚Bahn frei für den Oberboss! Baut einen Weg für ihn!‘"

4 Johannes’ Klamotten waren aus Kamelhaaren gemacht und wurden von einem Ledergürtel zusammengehalten. Er ernährte sich nur von Heuschrecken mit wildem Honig, so derbe drauf war der.

5 Er zog viele Menschen aus dem Umland an. Aus Jerusalem, dem Jordantal und auch dem Bezirk Judäa kamen sie.

6 Sie sagten vor ihm ganz offen, wo sie Mist in ihrem Leben gebaut hatten. Dann machte Johannes mit ihnen so eine religiöse Waschung im Jordan, indem er sie dort untertauchte, man nannte das Taufe.

1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, saying, 2 Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

Make ye ready the way of the Lord,

Make his paths straight.

4 Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about the Jordan; 6 and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
