1 But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews. 2 He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?"

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, "What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall."

4 "Hear, our God, for we are despised. Turn back their reproach on their own head. Give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Don’t cover their iniquity. Don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders."

6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

1 ORA, quando Samballat udì che noi edificavamo il muro, si adirò, e sdegnò grandemente, e si fece beffe de’ Giudei.

2 E disse in presenza de’ suoi fratelli, e della gente di guerra di Samaria: Che fanno cotesti spossati Giudei? Lasceransi fare? permetterassi che sacrifichino? permetterassi oggi che forniscano l’opera? faranno essi risorgere da’ mucchi della polvere le pietre che sono state arse?

3 E Tobia Ammonita, ch’era presso di lui, disse: Avvegnachè edifichino, non ci vuole che una volpe che salga, per rompere il lor muro di pietra.

4 Ascolta, o Dio nostro, come noi siamo in isprezzo; e fa’ ritornare il lor vituperio in sul capo loro, e mettili in isprezzo in un paese di cattività;

5 e non ricoprir la loro iniquità, e non sia il lor peccato cancellato dal tuo cospetto; perciocchè hanno fatto dispetto a quelli che edificavano, stando dirincontro a loro.

6 Noi adunque riedificammo il muro, e tutto il muro fu riparato delle sue rotture fino alla metà; e il popolo avea grande animo a lavorare
