1 David therefore departed from there and escaped to Adullam’s cave. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men. 3 David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother come out to you, until I know what God will do for me." 4 He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5 The prophet Gad said to David, "Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah."

Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.

6 Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him. 7 Saul said to his servants who stood around him, "Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds? 8 Is that why all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?"

9 Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, "Hear now, you son of Ahitub."

He answered, "Here I am, my lord."

13 Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?"

14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your body guard, and honored in your house? 15 Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more."

16 The king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house." 17 The king said to the guard who stood about him, "Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and didn’t disclose it to me." But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.

18 The king said to Doeg, "Turn and attack the priests!"

Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod. 19 He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword—both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. 20 One of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests.

22 David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father’s house. 23 Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. You will be safe with me."

1 Davi saiu daquele lugar e se refugiou na caverna de Adulão. Quando os seus irmãos e toda a casa de seu pai souberam disso, foram ficar com ele. 2 Ajuntaram-se a ele todos os homens que estavam em dificuldades, os que tinham dívidas, e todos os amargurados de espírito, e Davi se tornou o chefe deles. E havia com ele uns quatrocentos homens.

3 Daquele lugar Davi foi a Mispa, em Moabe, e disse ao rei de Moabe:

— Deixe que o meu pai e a minha mãe fiquem com vocês, até que eu saiba o que Deus vai fazer de mim.

4 Davi levou-os ao rei de Moabe, e eles moraram com ele durante todo o tempo em que Davi esteve naquele lugar seguro. 5 Porém o profeta Gade disse a Davi:

— Não fique neste lugar seguro; vá e entre na terra de Judá.

Então Davi saiu e foi para o bosque de Herete.

6 Saul ficou sabendo que Davi e os homens que o acompanhavam foram descobertos. Saul se encontrava em Gibeá, debaixo de um arvoredo, numa colina, com a sua lança na mão, e todos os seus servos estavam com ele. 7 Saul disse aos servos que o rodeavam:

— Escutem, filhos de Benjamim! Será que o filho de Jessé dará também a todos vocês terras e vinhas e fará de todos vocês chefes de milhares e chefes de centenas, 8 para que todos vocês tenham conspirado contra mim? Não houve ninguém que me avisasse que o meu filho fez aliança com o filho de Jessé. Não há nenhum de vocês que tenha pena de mim e me conte que o meu filho instigou contra mim o meu servo, para me armar ciladas, como se vê neste dia.

9 Então Doegue, o edomita, que também estava com os servos de Saul, disse:

— Eu vi o filho de Jessé chegar a Nobe, para falar com Aimeleque, filho de Aitube. 10 A pedido dele, Aimeleque consultou o Senhor. Também lhe deu mantimento e a espada de Golias, o filisteu.

11 Então o rei mandou chamar o sacerdote Aimeleque, filho de Aitube, e toda a casa de seu pai, a saber, os sacerdotes que estavam em Nobe. E todos eles vieram ao rei. 12 Saul disse:

— Escute, filho de Aitube!

Este respondeu:

— Eis-me aqui, meu senhor!

13 Então Saul lhe disse:

— Por que você conspirou contra mim, você e o filho de Jessé? Pois você lhe deu pão e espada e consultou Deus a favor dele, para que se levantasse contra mim e me armasse ciladas, como hoje se vê.

14 Aimeleque respondeu ao rei:

— E quem, entre todos os seus servos, é tão fiel quanto Davi, o genro do rei, chefe da sua guarda pessoal e honrado na sua casa? 15 Por acaso foi essa a primeira vez que consultei Deus em favor dele? Não! Que o rei jamais acuse este seu servo, nem ninguém da casa de meu pai, pois este seu servo de nada soube de tudo isso, nem muito nem pouco.

16 O rei respondeu:

— Aimeleque, você certamente morrerá, você e toda a casa de seu pai.

17 Então o rei disse aos guardas que o rodeavam:

— Voltem-se e matem os sacerdotes do Senhor, porque também estão de mãos dadas com Davi e porque souberam que fugiu e não me disseram nada.

Porém os servos do rei não quiseram estender as mãos contra os sacerdotes do Senhor. 18 Então o rei disse a Doegue:

— Volte-se você e mate os sacerdotes.

Então Doegue, o edomita, se voltou e investiu contra os sacerdotes. Naquele dia ele matou oitenta e cinco homens que vestiam estola sacerdotal de linho. 19 Também a Nobe, a cidade desses sacerdotes, passou a fio de espada. Matou homens e mulheres, meninos e crianças de peito, bois, jumentos e ovelhas.

20 Porém dos filhos de Aimeleque, filho de Aitube, um só, cujo nome era Abiatar, se salvou e fugiu para Davi. 21 Abiatar anunciou a Davi que Saul tinha matado os sacerdotes do Senhor. 22 Então Davi disse a Abiatar:

— Naquele dia, quando vi que Doegue, o edomita, estava ali, eu sabia que ele não deixaria de contar tudo a Saul. Eu fui a causa da morte de todas as pessoas da casa de seu pai. 23 Fique comigo, não tenha medo, porque quem procura a minha morte procura também a sua; mas comigo você estará a salvo.
