1 In the second year of Joash, son of Joahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. 3 He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, yet not like David his father. He did according to all that Joash his father had done. 4 However the high places were not taken away. The people still sacrificed and burned incense in the high places. 5 As soon as the kingdom was established in his hand, he killed his servants who had slain the king his father, 6 but the children of the murderers he didn’t put to death, according to that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, as Yahweh commanded, saying, "The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall die for his own sin."

7 He killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela by war, and called its name Joktheel, to this day. 8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let’s look one another in the face."

9 Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife.’ Then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by, and trampled down the thistle. 10 You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for why should you meddle to your harm, that you fall, even you, and Judah with you?"

11 But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 Judah was defeated by Israel; and each man fled to his tent. 13 Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh and came to Jerusalem, then broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in Yahweh’s house and in the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

15 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 16 Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.

17 Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years. 18 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 19 They made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 They brought him on horses, and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in David’s city.

21 All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. 22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah. After that the king slept with his fathers.

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria for forty-one years. 24 He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. He didn’t depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. 25 He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the sea of the Arabah, according to Yahweh, the God of Israel’s word, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath Hepher. 26 For Yahweh saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter for all, slave and free; and there was no helper for Israel. 27 Yahweh didn’t say that he would blot out the name of Israel from under the sky; but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash. 28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he fought, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, for Israel, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 29 Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zechariah his son reigned in his place.

1 No segundo ano do reinado de Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, rei de Israel, Amazias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, começou a reinar. 2 Tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Jeoadã e era de Jerusalém. 3 Amazias fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, ainda que não como Davi, seu pai; mas fez segundo tudo o que o seu pai Joás havia feito. 4 Apenas os lugares altos não foram tirados, e o povo ainda sacrificava e queimava incenso nesses altos.

5 Logo que o reino foi confirmado nas suas mãos, matou os servos que tinham assassinado o rei, seu pai. 6 No entanto, não matou os filhos dos assassinos, mas fez segundo está escrito no Livro da Lei de Moisés, no qual o Senhor deu ordem, dizendo: "Os pais não serão mortos por causa dos filhos, nem os filhos serão mortos por causa dos pais; cada qual será morto pelo seu próprio pecado."

7 Amazias matou dez mil edomitas no vale do Sal e conquistou a cidade de Sela na guerra, dando-lhe o nome de Jocteel, que ela conserva até o dia de hoje.

8 Então Amazias enviou mensageiros a Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, rei de Israel, dizendo:

— Venha me enfrentar no campo de batalha.

9 Porém Jeoás, rei de Israel, respondeu a Amazias, rei de Judá:

— O espinheiro que está no Líbano mandou dizer ao cedro que lá está: "Dê a sua filha por mulher ao meu filho." Mas um animal selvagem, que estava no Líbano, passou e pisoteou o espinheiro. 10 Na verdade, você derrotou os edomitas, e o seu coração se encheu de orgulho. Glorie-se disso e fique em casa. Por que provocar um mal que trará somente desgraça para você e para Judá?

11 Mas Amazias não quis atendê-lo. Então Jeoás, rei de Israel, avançou contra Amazias, rei de Judá, e eles se enfrentaram em Bete-Semes, que está em Judá. 12 Judá foi derrotado por Israel, e os soldados tiveram de fugir para as suas casas. 13 Jeoás, rei de Israel, prendeu Amazias, rei de Judá, filho de Joás, filho de Acazias, em Bete-Semes. Então foi a Jerusalém e derrubou uma parte da muralha da cidade, desde o Portão de Efraim até o Portão da Esquina, numa extensão de mais ou menos duzentos metros. 14 Pegou todo o ouro, a prata e todos os utensílios que havia na Casa do Senhor e nos tesouros do palácio real, bem como alguns reféns; e voltou para Samaria.

15 Quanto aos demais atos de Jeoás, ao que fez e ao seu poder, com que lutou contra Amazias, rei de Judá, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel? 16 Jeoás morreu e foi sepultado em Samaria, junto aos reis de Israel. E Jeroboão, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.

17 Amazias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, viveu quinze anos depois da morte de Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, rei de Israel. 18 Quanto aos demais atos de Amazias, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Judá?

19 Conspiraram contra ele em Jerusalém, e ele fugiu para Laquis; porém enviaram homens atrás dele até Laquis e o mataram. 20 Trouxeram-no sobre cavalos e o sepultaram em Jerusalém, junto a seus pais, na Cidade de Davi.

21 Todo o povo de Judá tomou Uzias, que tinha dezesseis anos de idade, e o constituiu rei em lugar de Amazias, seu pai. 22 Depois da morte de seu pai, Uzias reconstruiu Elate e a restituiu a Judá.

23 No décimo quinto ano do reinado de Amazias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, Jeroboão, filho de Jeoás, rei de Israel, começou a reinar em Samaria; e reinou quarenta e um anos. 24 Jeroboão fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor. Jamais se afastou de nenhum dos pecados de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que este levou Israel a cometer. 25 Restabeleceu os limites de Israel, desde a entrada de Hamate até o mar da Arabá, segundo a palavra do Senhor, Deus de Israel, anunciada por meio de seu servo Jonas, filho de Amitai, o profeta, que era de Gate-Hefer. 26 Porque o Senhor viu que a aflição de Israel era muito amarga, porque não havia nem escravo, nem livre, nem quem socorresse Israel. 27 O Senhor ainda não havia falado em apagar o nome de Israel da face da terra; porém os livrou por meio de Jeroboão, filho de Jeoás.

28 Quanto aos demais atos de Jeroboão, tudo o que fez, o seu poder, como lutou e como reconquistou Damasco e Hamate, pertencentes a Judá, para Israel, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel? 29 Jeroboão morreu e foi sepultado nos túmulos dos reis de Israel; e Zacarias, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.
