1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel for nine years. 2 He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him. 3 Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea became his servant, and brought him tribute. 4 The king of Assyria discovered a conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria seized him, and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

7 It was so because the children of Israel had sinned against Yahweh their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, 8 and walked in the statutes of the nations whom Yahweh cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they made. 9 The children of Israel secretly did things that were not right against Yahweh their God; and they built high places for themselves in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city; 10 and they set up for themselves pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree; 11 and there they burned incense in all the high places, as the nations whom Yahweh carried away before them did; and they did wicked things to provoke Yahweh to anger; 12 and they served idols, of which Yahweh had said to them, "You shall not do this thing." 13 Yet Yahweh testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, "Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets." 14 Notwithstanding, they would not listen, but hardened their neck like the neck of their fathers who didn’t believe in Yahweh their God. 15 They rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom Yahweh had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16 They abandoned all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made molten images for themselves, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal. 17 They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger. 18 Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

19 Also Judah didn’t keep the commandments of Yahweh their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. 20 Yahweh rejected all the offspring of Israel, afflicted them, and delivered them into the hands of raiders, until he had cast them out of his sight. 21 For he tore Israel from David’s house; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king; and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Yahweh, and made them sin a great sin. 22 The children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they didn’t depart from them 23 until Yahweh removed Israel out of his sight, as he said by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day.

24 The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, from Cuthah, from Avva, and from Hamath and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they possessed Samaria and lived in its cities. 25 So it was, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they didn’t fear Yahweh. Therefore Yahweh sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 Therefore they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, "The nations which you have carried away and placed in the cities of Samaria don’t know the law of the god of the land. Therefore he has sent lions among them; and behold, they kill them, because they don’t know the law of the god of the land."

27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, "Carry there one of the priests whom you brought from there; and let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the law of the god of the land."

28 So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear Yahweh.

29 However every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived. 30 The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared Yahweh, and also made from among themselves priests of the high places for themselves, who sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. 33 They feared Yahweh, and also served their own gods, after the ways of the nations from among whom they had been carried away. 34 To this day they do what they did before. They don’t fear Yahweh, and they do not follow the statutes, or the ordinances, or the law, or the commandment which Yahweh commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; 35 with whom Yahweh had made a covenant and commanded them, saying, "You shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them; 36 but you shall fear Yahweh, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm, and you shall bow yourselves to him, and you shall sacrifice to him. 37 The statutes and the ordinances, and the law and the commandment which he wrote for you, you shall observe to do forever more. You shall not fear other gods. 38 You shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you. You shall not fear other gods. 39 But you shall fear Yahweh your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies."

40 However they didn’t listen, but they did what they did before. 41 So these nations feared Yahweh, and also served their engraved images. Their children did likewise, and so did their children’s children. They do as their fathers did to this day.

1 No décimo segundo ano do reinado de Acaz, rei de Judá, Oseias, filho de Elá, começou a reinar; e reinou sobre Israel, em Samaria, nove anos. 2 Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, porém não como os reis de Israel que vieram antes dele.

3 Salmaneser, rei da Assíria, fez guerra contra Oseias, e este ficou sendo servo dele e lhe pagava tributo. 4 Porém o rei da Assíria descobriu que Oseias estava conspirando contra ele. Oseias tinha mandado mensageiros a Sô, rei do Egito, e não mais pagava tributo ao rei da Assíria, como anteriormente fazia de ano em ano. Por isso, o rei da Assíria prendeu Oseias e o lançou num cárcere.

5 Depois, o rei da Assíria passou por toda a terra, foi até a cidade de Samaria e a sitiou por três anos. 6 No nono ano do reinado de Oseias, o rei da Assíria conquistou Samaria e levou os israelitas para a Assíria. Ele os fez habitar em Hala, junto a Habor, rio de Gozã, e nas cidades dos medos.

7 Isso aconteceu porque os filhos de Israel pecaram contra o Senhor, seu Deus, que os tirou da terra do Egito e os livrou do poder de Faraó, rei do Egito; e temeram outros deuses. 8 Andaram nos estatutos das nações que o Senhor expulsou de diante dos filhos de Israel e nos costumes estabelecidos pelos reis de Israel. 9 Os filhos de Israel fizeram contra o Senhor, seu Deus, o que não era reto; edificaram para si lugares altos em todas as suas cidades, desde a torre dos vigias até a cidade fortificada. 10 Levantaram para si colunas e postes da deusa Aserá, em todas as colinas mais elevadas e debaixo de todas as árvores frondosas. 11 Queimaram ali incenso em todos os lugares altos, como as nações que o Senhor havia expulsado de diante deles. Cometeram ações perversas para provocarem o Senhor à ira 12 e serviram os ídolos, dos quais o Senhor lhes tinha dito: "Não façam estas coisas."

13 O Senhor advertiu Israel e Judá por meio de todos os profetas e de todos os videntes, dizendo: "Voltem-se dos seus maus caminhos e guardem os meus mandamentos e os meus estatutos, segundo toda a Lei que ordenei aos pais de vocês e que lhes enviei por meio dos meus servos, os profetas." 14 Porém eles não quiseram ouvir; se tornaram obstinados e foram teimosos como os seus pais, que não creram no Senhor, seu Deus. 15 Rejeitaram os estatutos e a aliança que Deus tinha feito com os pais deles, e desprezaram as suas advertências. Seguiram os ídolos sem valor, e assim eles mesmos se tornaram sem valor. Seguiram as nações que estavam ao redor deles, das quais o Senhor lhes havia ordenado que não as imitassem. 16 Desprezaram todos os mandamentos do Senhor, seu Deus, e fizeram para si imagens de fundição, dois bezerros; fizeram um poste da deusa Aserá, e adoraram todo o exército do céu, e serviram Baal. 17 Também queimaram os seus filhos e as suas filhas como sacrifício, deram-se à prática de adivinhações e acreditaram em agouros; e venderam-se para fazer o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, para o provocarem à ira. 18 Por isso o Senhor muito se indignou contra Israel e o afastou da sua presença; e nada mais ficou, a não ser a tribo de Judá.

19 Também Judá não guardou os mandamentos do Senhor, seu Deus; pelo contrário, andaram nos costumes que Israel introduziu. 20 Por isso o Senhor rejeitou toda a descendência de Israel, e os afligiu, e os entregou nas mãos dos espoliadores, até que os expulsou da sua presença.

21 Pois, quando ele separou Israel da casa de Davi, e eles fizeram de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, o seu rei, Jeroboão levou Israel a abandonar o Senhor e o levou a cometer grande pecado. 22 Assim, os filhos de Israel andaram em todos os pecados que Jeroboão tinha cometido; nunca se afastaram deles, 23 até que o Senhor afastou Israel da sua presença, como havia falado pelo ministério de todos os seus servos, os profetas. E assim Israel foi levado cativo da sua terra para a Assíria, onde permanece até o dia de hoje.

24 O rei da Assíria trouxe gente da Babilônia, de Cuta, de Ava, de Hamate e de Sefarvaim e os fez morar nas cidades de Samaria, em lugar dos filhos de Israel. Tomaram posse de Samaria e habitaram nas suas cidades. 25 A princípio, quando passaram a morar ali, não temeram o Senhor. Então o Senhor mandou para o meio deles leões, que mataram alguns do povo. 26 Por isso disseram ao rei da Assíria:

— Os povos que o senhor, ó rei, transportou e fez habitar nas cidades de Samaria não sabem a maneira de servir o deus daquela terra e por isso ele mandou leões para o meio deles. Os leões estão matando aquelas pessoas, porque elas não sabem como servir o deus daquela terra.

27 Então o rei da Assíria mandou dizer:

— Levem para lá um dos sacerdotes que vocês trouxeram de lá. Que ele vá, fique morando lá, e lhes ensine a maneira de servir o deus daquela terra.

28 Assim um dos sacerdotes que havia sido levado de Samaria foi e ficou morando em Betel. E lhes ensinava como deviam temer o Senhor.

29 Porém cada nação fez ainda os seus próprios deuses nas cidades em que morava, e os puseram nos santuários dos lugares altos que os samaritanos tinham feito. 30 Os da Babilônia fizeram Sucote-Benote; os de Cuta fizeram Nergal; os de Hamate fizeram Asima; 31 os aveus fizeram Nibaz e Tartaque; e os sefarvitas queimavam seus filhos a Adrameleque e a Anameleque, deuses de Sefarvaim. 32 Mas adoravam também o Senhor. Constituíram como sacerdotes dos lugares altos homens tirados do meio do povo, os quais oficiavam a favor deles nos santuários dos altos. 33 E assim eles adoravam o Senhor e, ao mesmo tempo, serviam os seus próprios deuses, segundo o costume das nações do meio das quais tinham sido trazidos.

34 Até o dia de hoje fazem segundo os antigos costumes. Não temem o Senhor, não fazem segundo os seus estatutos e juízos, nem segundo a lei e o mandamento que o Senhor ordenou aos filhos de Jacó, a quem deu o nome de Israel.

35 Ora, o Senhor tinha feito uma aliança com eles e lhes havia ordenado o seguinte: "Não temam outros deuses; não se prostrem diante deles, não os sirvam, nem lhes ofereçam sacrifícios. 36 Mas temam o Senhor, que os tirou da terra do Egito com grande poder e com braço estendido; prostrem-se diante dele e a ele ofereçam sacrifícios. 37 Tenham o cuidado de observar todos os dias os estatutos e os juízos, a lei e o mandamento que ele lhes deu por escrito. Não adorem outros deuses. 38 Não se esqueçam da aliança que fiz com vocês e não adorem outros deuses. 39 Mas adorem o Senhor, seu Deus, e ele os livrará das mãos de todos os seus inimigos."

40 Eles, porém, não deram ouvidos a isso e continuaram a fazer segundo o seu antigo costume. 41 Assim, estas nações adoravam o Senhor e serviam as suas próprias imagens de escultura. Como fizeram os seus pais, assim fazem também os seus filhos e os filhos de seus filhos, até o dia de hoje.
