1 When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, "My son?"

He said to him, "Here I am."

2 He said, "See now, I am old. I don’t know the day of my death. 3 Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and get me venison. 4 Make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and that my soul may bless you before I die."

5 Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. 6 Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, "Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 ‘Bring me venison, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless you before Yahweh before my death.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and get me two good young goats from there. I will make them savory food for your father, such as he loves. 10 You shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death."

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 What if my father touches me? I will seem to him as a deceiver, and I would bring a curse on myself, and not a blessing."

13 His mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice, and go get them for me."

14 He went, and got them, and brought them to his mother. His mother made savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Rebekah took the good clothes of Esau, her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob, her younger son. 16 She put the skins of the young goats on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck. 17 She gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 He came to his father, and said, "My father?"

He said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"

19 Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done what you asked me to do. Please arise, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me."

20 Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?"

He said, "Because Yahweh your God gave me success."

21 Isaac said to Jacob, "Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not."

22 Jacob went near to Isaac his father. He felt him, and said, "The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 He didn’t recognize him, because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him. 24 He said, "Are you really my son Esau?"

He said, "I am."

25 He said, "Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless you."

He brought it near to him, and he ate. He brought him wine, and he drank. 26 His father Isaac said to him, "Come near now, and kiss me, my son." 27 He came near, and kissed him. He smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him, and said,

"Behold, the smell of my son

is as the smell of a field which Yahweh has blessed.

28 God give you of the dew of the sky,

of the fatness of the earth,

and plenty of grain and new wine.

29 Let peoples serve you,

and nations bow down to you.

Be lord over your brothers.

Let your mother’s sons bow down to you.

Cursed be everyone who curses you.

Blessed be everyone who blesses you."

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had just gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also made savory food, and brought it to his father. He said to his father, "Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that your soul may bless me."

32 Isaac his father said to him, "Who are you?"

He said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."

33 Isaac trembled violently, and said, "Who, then, is he who has taken venison, and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, he will be blessed."

34 When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me, even me also, my father."

35 He said, "Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing."

36 He said, "Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing." He said, "Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?"

37 Isaac answered Esau, "Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then will I do for you, my son?"

38 Esau said to his father, "Do you have just one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, my father." Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

39 Isaac his father answered him,

"Behold, your dwelling will be of the fatness of the earth,

and of the dew of the sky from above.

40 You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother.

It will happen, when you will break loose,

that you will shake his yoke from off your neck."

41 Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob."

42 The words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. She sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, "Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban, my brother, in Haran. 44 Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away— 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send, and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?"

46 Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?"

1 Quando Isaque envelheceu e os seus olhos se enfraqueceram, a ponto de não mais poder ver, chamou Esaú, seu filho mais velho, e lhe disse:

— Meu filho!

Esaú respondeu:

— Aqui estou!

2 O pai lhe disse:

— Estou velho e não sei o dia da minha morte. 3 Pegue agora as suas armas, a sua aljava e o seu arco, vá ao campo e apanhe para mim alguma caça. 4 Faça uma comida saborosa, como eu aprecio, e traga aqui para mim, para que eu coma e abençoe você antes que eu morra.

5 Rebeca esteve escutando enquanto Isaque falava com Esaú, seu filho. E Esaú foi ao campo para apanhar a caça e trazê-la. 6 Então Rebeca disse a Jacó, seu filho:

— Ouvi seu pai falar com Esaú, o seu irmão. Ele disse: 7 "Traga uma caça e faça uma comida saborosa para mim, para que eu coma e o abençoe na presença do Senhor, antes que eu morra." 8 Agora, meu filho, escute as minhas palavras e faça o que lhe ordeno. 9 Vá ao rebanho e traga-me dois bons cabritos. Deles farei uma saborosa comida para o seu pai, como ele aprecia. 10 Você a levará ao seu pai, para que a coma e o abençoe, antes que ele morra.

11 Mas Jacó disse a Rebeca, sua mãe:

— Esaú, meu irmão, é um homem peludo, e eu sou um homem de pele lisa. 12 Se o meu pai me apalpar, passarei a ser visto por ele como zombador e trarei sobre mim maldição e não bênção.

13 A mãe respondeu:

— Caia sobre mim essa maldição, meu filho. Faça somente o que eu digo: vá e traga os cabritos para mim.

14 Ele foi, pegou os cabritos e os trouxe a sua mãe, que fez uma saborosa comida, como o pai dele apreciava. 15 Depois, Rebeca pegou a melhor roupa de Esaú, seu filho mais velho, roupa que tinha consigo em casa, e vestiu Jacó, seu filho mais novo. 16 Com a pele dos cabritos cobriu-lhe as mãos e a lisura do pescoço. 17 Então entregou a Jacó, seu filho, a comida saborosa e o pão que havia preparado.

18 Jacó foi a seu pai e disse:

— Meu pai!

Ele respondeu:

— Fale! Quem é você, meu filho?

19 Jacó respondeu a seu pai:

— Sou Esaú, seu filho primogênito. Fiz o que o senhor ordenou. Levante-se, por favor; sente-se e coma da minha caça, para que depois o senhor me abençoe.

20 Isaque perguntou a seu filho:

— Como foi que você conseguiu achar a caça tão depressa, meu filho?

Ele respondeu:

— Porque o Senhor, seu Deus, a mandou ao meu encontro.

21 Então Isaque disse a Jacó:

— Chegue mais perto, para que eu o apalpe, meu filho, e veja se você é meu filho Esaú ou não.

22 Jacó se aproximou de Isaque, seu pai, que o apalpou e disse:

— A voz é de Jacó, mas as mãos são de Esaú.

23 E não o reconheceu, porque as mãos realmente estavam peludas como as de seu irmão Esaú. E o abençoou. 24 Então perguntou:

— Você é mesmo o meu filho Esaú?

Ele respondeu:

— Eu sou.

25 Então disse:

— Traga isso para perto de mim, para que eu coma da caça de meu filho e o abençoe.

Jacó a levou até ele e o pai comeu. Trouxe-lhe também vinho, e ele bebeu. 26 Então Isaque, seu pai, lhe disse:

— Venha cá e me dê um beijo, meu filho.

27 Ele se aproximou e o beijou. Então o pai aspirou o cheiro da roupa dele e o abençoou. Ele disse:

Eis que o cheiro do meu filho

é como o cheiro do campo,

que o Senhor abençoou;

28 Deus lhe dê do orvalho do céu,

e da exuberância da terra,

e fartura de trigo e de vinho.

29 Que povos sirvam você,

e nações o reverenciem.

Que você seja senhor

de seus irmãos,

e os filhos de sua mãe

se curvem diante de você.

Maldito seja quem o amaldiçoar,

e bendito quem o abençoar.

30 E aconteceu que, depois que Isaque abençoou Jacó e este tinha acabado de sair da presença de seu pai, chegou Esaú, seu irmão, vindo da sua caçada. 31 Ele também fez uma comida saborosa e a levou ao seu pai. E lhe disse:

— Levante-se, meu pai, e coma da caça de seu filho, para que o senhor me abençoe.

32 Então Isaque, o pai dele, perguntou:

— Quem é você?

Ele respondeu:

— Sou o seu filho, o seu primogênito; sou Esaú.

33 Isaque estremeceu, sentindo uma violenta comoção. E disse:

— Mas então quem foi aquele que apanhou a caça e trouxe para mim? Eu comi tudo, antes que você chegasse, e o abençoei, e ele será abençoado.

34 Ao ouvir tais palavras de seu pai, Esaú deu um grito cheio de amargura e disse:

— Abençoe também a mim, meu pai!

35 Mas Isaque respondeu:

— Seu irmão veio e, com astúcia, tomou a bênção que era sua.

36 Esaú disse:

— Não é com razão que ele se chama Jacó? Pois já duas vezes me enganou: tirou-me o direito de primogenitura e agora tomou a bênção que era minha.

E perguntou:

— Então o senhor não reservou nenhuma bênção para mim?

37 Isaque respondeu a Esaú:

— Eis que o constituí senhor sobre você, e fiz com que todos os parentes sejam servos dele; de trigo e de vinho o supri. Assim, o que posso fazer por você, meu filho?

38 Esaú disse a seu pai:

— Será que o senhor, meu pai, tem somente uma bênção? Abençoe também a mim, meu pai.

E, levantando Esaú a voz, chorou. 39 Então Isaque, seu pai, disse:

Sua habitação será longe

dos lugares férteis da terra,

longe do orvalho que cai do alto.

40 Você viverá da sua espada

e servirá o seu irmão;

quando, porém, você se libertar,

sacudirá do seu pescoço

o jugo dele.

41 Esaú passou a odiar Jacó por causa da bênção com que seu pai o tinha abençoado. E disse em seu íntimo:

— Os dias de luto por meu pai se aproximam; então matarei meu irmão Jacó.

42 Chegaram aos ouvidos de Rebeca estas palavras de Esaú, seu filho mais velho. Então ela mandou chamar Jacó, seu filho mais moço, e lhe disse:

— Eis que o seu irmão Esaú se consola fazendo planos para matá-lo. 43 Agora, pois, meu filho, ouça bem o que vou dizer: levante-se e fuja para a casa de Labão, meu irmão, em Harã. 44 Fique com ele alguns dias, até que passe o furor de seu irmão, 45 e cesse o rancor dele contra você, e se esqueça do que você lhe fez. Quando isso acontecer, enviarei alguém para trazer você de volta. Não posso perder os meus dois filhos num só dia!

46 Então Rebeca disse a Isaque:

— Estou aborrecida da vida por causa das filhas de Hete. Se Jacó tomar esposa dentre as filhas de Hete, tais como estas, as filhas desta terra, de que me servirá a vida?
