The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart,
and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.
O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
He heals the broken in heart,
and binds up their wounds.
My flesh and my heart fails,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
For the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity,
whose name is Holy, says:
"I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
For my hand has made all these things,
and so all these things came to be," says the LORD:
"but I will look to this man,
even to he who is poor and of a contrite spirit,
and who trembles at my word.
The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the humble.
He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and release to those who are bound,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
to provide for those who mourn in Zion,
to give to them a garland for ashes,
the oil of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness,
that they may be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD,
that he may be glorified.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the gentle,
for they shall inherit the earth.
For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death. For behold, this same thing, that you were grieved in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vindication! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter.
He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Messiah may rest on me.
