21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,

and those who love it will eat its fruit.  *

1 A gentle answer turns away anger,  *

but a harsh word stirs up wrath.  *

4 The tongue that heals is a tree of life,  *

but a devious tongue  * breaks the spirit.

23 A person takes joy in giving an answer;  *

and a timely word — how good that is!  *

22 Plans fail when there is no counsel,

but with many advisers they succeed.  *

19 When there are many words, sin is unavoidable,

but the one who controls his lips is prudent.  *

3 The one who guards his mouth protects his life;  *

the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.  *

28 Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent —

discerning, when he seals his lips.  *

13 A gossip goes around revealing a secret,

but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence.  *

8 Speak up  * for those who have no voice,  *,*

for the justice of all who are dispossessed.  *

12 The words from the mouth of a wise person are gracious,  *

but the lips of a fool consume him.  *

36 I tell you that on the day of judgment*people will have to account*for every careless*word they speak.*

Restoring a Brother

15 "If your brother sins against you,*go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother.*

7 When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words.*

3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms*will be proclaimed on the housetops.*

45 A good person produces good out of the good stored up in his heart. An evil person produces evil out of the evil stored up in his heart, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

9 If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord,"  * and believe in your heart  * that God raised him from the dead,  * you will be saved.

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should,  * but the Spirit himself intercedes for us  *,* with inexpressible groanings.

29 No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need,  * so that it gives grace to those who hear.

Hearing and Doing the Word

19 My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,  *

2 For we all stumble in many ways.  * If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is mature, able also to control the whole body.  *

9 not paying back evil for evil  * or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing,  * since you were called for this, so that you may inherit a blessing.

18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.  *

God’s Faithfulness to His People

1 Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;

proclaim his deeds among the peoples.  *

8 My mouth is full of praise

and honor to you all day long.  *
