Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in order to make the scripture come true, he said, "I am thirsty."
A bowl was there, full of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked in the wine, put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted up to his lips. Jesus drank the wine and said, "It is finished!"
Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
After the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took the robe, which was made of one piece of woven cloth without any seams in it. The soldiers said to one another, "Let’s not tear it; let’s throw dice to see who will get it." This happened in order to make the scripture come true:
"They divided my clothes among themselves
and gambled for my robe."
And this is what the soldiers did.
Standing close to Jesus' cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there; so he said to his mother, "He is your son."
Then he said to the disciple, "She is your mother." From that time the disciple took her to live in his home.
When they came to the place called "The Skull," they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said, "Forgive them, Father! They don’t know what they are doing."
They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice. The people stood there watching while the Jewish leaders made fun of him: "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah whom God has chosen!"
The soldiers also made fun of him: they came up to him and offered him cheap wine, and said, "Save yourself if you are the king of the Jews!"
Above him were written these words: "This is the King of the Jews."
One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: "Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!"
The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, "Don’t you fear God? You received the same sentence he did. Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong." And he said to Jesus, "Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!"
Jesus said to him, "I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me."
At noon the whole country was covered with darkness, which lasted for three hours. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud shout, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why did you abandon me?"
Then the curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split apart, the graves broke open, and many of God’s people who had died were raised to life. They left the graves, and after Jesus rose from death, they went into the Holy City, where many people saw them.
When the army officer and the soldiers with him who were watching Jesus saw the earthquake and everything else that happened, they were terrified and said, "He really was the Son of God!"
But because of our sins he was wounded,
beaten because of the evil we did.
We are healed by the punishment he suffered,
made whole by the blows he received.
All of us were like sheep that were lost,
each of us going his own way.
But the Lord made the punishment fall on him,
the punishment all of us deserved.
"He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly;
he never said a word.
Like a lamb about to be slaughtered,
like a sheep about to be sheared,
he never said a word.
An evil gang is around me;
like a pack of dogs they close in on me;
they tear at my hands and feet.
All my bones can be seen.
My enemies look at me and stare.
They gamble for my clothes
and divide them among themselves.
All who see me make fun of me;
they stick out their tongues and shake their heads.
"You relied on the Lord," they say.
"Why doesn’t he save you?
If the Lord likes you,
why doesn’t he help you?"
O amor que se entrega
Ninguém tem maior amor do que aquele que dá a vida pelos amigos. Deus prova seu amor em que Cristo morreu por nós quando ainda éramos pecadores.
The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.
We were God’s enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son. Now that we are God’s friends, how much more will we be saved by Christ’s life!
This is how we know what love is: Christ gave his life for us. We too, then, ought to give our lives for others!
And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone.
He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death—
his death on the cross.
Morte e ressurreição
Jesus morreu e ressuscitou, e a morte não mais tem domínio sobre Ele. Pelo batismo, participamos de sua morte e ressurreição.
For we know that Christ has been raised from death and will never die again—death will no longer rule over him. And so, because he died, sin has no power over him; and now he lives his life in fellowship with God.
For surely you know that when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.
Everyone must die once, and after that be judged by God. In the same manner Christ also was offered in sacrifice once to take away the sins of many. He will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are waiting for him.
"Listen to these words, fellow Israelites! Jesus of Nazareth was a man whose divine authority was clearly proven to you by all the miracles and wonders which God performed through him. You yourselves know this, for it happened here among you. In accordance with his own plan God had already decided that Jesus would be handed over to you; and you killed him by letting sinful men crucify him. But God raised him from death, setting him free from its power, because it was impossible that death should hold him prisoner.
"I am the good shepherd, who is willing to die for the sheep.
This means that every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
