12 *"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be *long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Children and Parents

1 Children, *obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 *"Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3 "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

20 *Children, obey your parents *in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.

22 *Listen to your father who begot you,

And do not despise your mother when she is old.

26 He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother

Is*a son who causes shame and brings reproach.

20 *Whoever curses his father or his mother,

*His lamp will be put out in deep darkness.

4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and *to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God.

6 *Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.

6 "And *these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 *You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Shun Evil Counsel

8 *My son, hear the instruction of your father,

And do not forsake the law of your mother;

9 For they willbe a *graceful ornament on your head,

And chains about your neck.

4 And *you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but *bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

21 *Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

15 The rod and rebuke give *wisdom,

But a child left tohimself brings shame to his mother.

24 *He who spares his rod hates his son,

But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

7 *If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what *son is there whom a father does not chasten?

3 Behold, *children are a heritage from the Lord,

*The fruit of the womb is a *reward.

4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,

So are the children of one’s youth.

5 *Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;

*They shall not be ashamed,

But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

6 *Children’s children are the crown of old men,

And the glory of children is their father.

24 *The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,

And he who begets a wise child will delight in him.

Wise Sayings of Solomon

1 The proverbs of *Solomon:

*A wise son makes a glad father,

But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

11 *If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?13 If you then, being evil, know how to give *good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, *and especially for those of his household, *he has denied the faith *and is worse than an unbeliever.

15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, *choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether *the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or *the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. *But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

24 *Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and *be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

16 *"Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin.
