1 Tinha Josias oito anos de idade quando começou a reinar, e reinou trinta e um anos em Jerusalém; e era o nome de sua mãe, Jedida, filha de Adaías, de Bozcate.2 E fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor; e andou em todo o caminho de Davi, seu pai, e não se apartou dele nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.3 Sucedeu que, no ano décimo oitavo do rei Josias, o rei mandou ao escrivão Safã, filho de Azalias, filho de Mesulão, à casa do Senhor, dizendo:4 Sobe a Hilquias, o sumo sacerdote, para que tome o dinheiro que se trouxe à casa do Senhor, o qual os guardas do umbral da porta ajuntaram do povo,5 E que o deem na mão dos que têm cargo da obra, e estão encarregados da casa do Senhor; para que o deem àqueles que fazem a obra que há na casa do Senhor, para repararem as fendas da casa;6 Aos carpinteiros, aos edificadores e aos pedreiros; e para comprar madeira e pedras lavradas, para repararem a casa.7 Porém não se pediu conta do dinheiro que se lhes entregara nas suas mãos, porquanto procediam com fidelidade.8 Então disse o sumo sacerdote Hilquias ao escrivão Safã: Achei o livro da lei na casa do Senhor. E Hilquias deu o livro a Safã, e ele o leu.9 Então o escrivão Safã veio ter com o rei e, dando-lhe conta, disse: Teus servos ajuntaram o dinheiro que se achou na casa, e o entregaram na mão dos que tem cargo da obra, que estão encarregados da casa do Senhor.10 Também Safã, o escrivão, fez saber ao rei, dizendo: O sacerdote Hilquias me deu um livro. E Safã o leu diante do rei.11 Sucedeu, pois, que, ouvindo o rei as palavras do livro da lei, rasgou as suas vestes.12 E o rei mandou a Hilquias, o sacerdote, a Aicão, filho de Safã, a Acbor, filho de Micaías, a Safã o escrivão e a Asaías, o servo do rei, dizendo:13 Ide, e consultai o Senhor por mim, pelo povo e por todo o Judá, acerca das palavras deste livro que se achou; porque grande é o furor do Senhor, que se acendeu contra nós; porquanto nossos pais não deram ouvidos às palavras deste livro, para fazerem conforme tudo quanto acerca de nós está escrito.14 Então foi o sacerdote Hilquias, e Aicão, Acbor, Safã e Asaías à profetisa Hulda, mulher de Salum, filho de Ticvá, o filho de Harás, o guarda das vestiduras (e ela habitava em Jerusalém, na segunda parte), e lhe falaram.15 E ela lhes disse: Assim diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Dizei ao homem que vos enviou a mim:16 Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que trarei mal sobre este lugar, e sobre os seus moradores, a saber: todas as palavras do livro que leu o rei de Judá.17 Porquanto me deixaram, e queimaram incenso a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira por todas as obras das suas mãos, o meu furor se acendeu contra este lugar, e não se apagará.18 Porém ao rei de Judá, que vos enviou a consultar o Senhor, assim lhe direis: Assim diz o Senhor Deus de Israel, acerca das palavras, que ouviste:19 Porquanto o teu coração se enterneceu, e te humilhaste perante o Senhor, quando ouviste o que falei contra este lugar, e contra os seus moradores, que seria para assolação e para maldição, e que rasgaste as tuas vestes, e choraste perante mim, também eu te ouvi, diz o Senhor.20 Por isso eis que eu te recolherei a teus pais, e tu serás recolhido em paz à tua sepultura, e os teus olhos não verão todo o mal que hei de trazer sobre este lugar. Então tornaram a trazer ao rei a resposta.

1 Eight years old was Josiah when he became king, and thirty and one years did he reign in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Yedidah, the daughter of ‘Adayah of Bozkath.2 And he did what is right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right or to the left.3 And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azalyahu, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the Lord, saying,4 Go up to Chilkiyahu the high–priest, that he may collect up all the money which is brought into the house of the Lord, which the door–keepers have gathered from the people:5 And let them deliver it into the hand of those who overlook the workmen, that have been appointed as overseers of the house of the Lord; and let them give it to those who do the work who are in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house:6 Unto the carpenters, and the builders, and the masons, and to buy timber and hewn stones to repair the house.7 Nevertheless shall there be no reckoning made with them for the money that is delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully.8 And Chilkiyahu the high–priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, A book of the law have I found in the house of the Lord. And Chilkiyah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have taken out all the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of those who overlook the workmen, that have been appointed overseers of the house of the Lord.10 And Shaphan the scribe also told the king, saying, A book hath Chilkiyahu the priest given me. And Shaphan read it before the king.11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.12 And the king commanded Chilkiyah the priest, and Achikam the son of Shaphan, and ‘Achbor the son of Michayah, and Shaphan the scribe, and ‘Assahyah a servant of the king’s, saying,13 Go ye, inquire of the Lord in my behalf, and in behalf of the people, and in behalf of all Judah, concerning the words of this book that hath been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that hath been kindled against us, because our fathers did not hearken unto the words of this book, to do in accordance with all that is prescribed concerning us.14 And Chilkiyahu the priest, and Achikam, and ‘Achbor, and Shaphan, and ‘Assahyah, went unto Chuldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Charchass, the keeper of the wardrobe; now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the suburb;and they spoke unto her.15 And she said unto them, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Say unto the man that hath sent you to me,16 Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read;17 Because they have forsaken me, and have burnt incense unto other gods, in order to provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands: therefore is my wrath kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.18 But with respect to the king of Judah who sendeth you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall ye say to him, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Concerning the words which thou hast heard;19 Because thy heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I had spoken against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become an astonishment and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me: I also have heard it, saith the Lord.20 Therefore, behold, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered unto thy graves in peace; and thy eyes shall not look on all the evil which I am bringing over this place. And they brought the king word again.
