1 Vi o Senhor, que estava em pé sobre o altar; e me disse: Fere o capitel, e estremeçam os umbrais, e faze tudo em pedaços sobre a cabeça de todos eles; e eu matarei à espada até ao último deles; nenhum deles conseguirá fugir, nenhum deles escapará.2 Ainda que cavem até ao inferno, a minha mão os tirará dali; e, se subirem ao céu, dali os farei descer.3 E, se se esconderem no cume do Carmelo, buscá-los-ei, e dali os tirarei; e, se dos meus olhos se ocultarem no fundo do mar, ali darei ordem à serpente, e ela os picará.4 E, se forem em cativeiro diante de seus inimigos, ali darei ordem à espada que os mate; e eu porei os meus olhos sobre eles para o mal, e não para o bem.5 Porque o Senhor Deus dos Exércitos é o que toca a terra, e ela se derrete, e todos os que habitam nela chorarão; e ela subirá toda como um rio, e abaixará como o rio do Egito.6 Ele é o que edifica as suas câmaras superiores no céu, e fundou na terra a sua abóbada, e o que chama as águas do mar, e as derrama sobre a terra; o Senhor é o seu nome.7 Não me sois, vós, ó filhos de Israel, como os filhos dos etíopes? diz o Senhor: Não fiz eu subir a Israel da terra do Egito, e aos filisteus de Caftor, e aos sírios de Quir?8 Eis que os olhos do Senhor Deus estão contra este reino pecador, e eu o destruirei de sobre a face da terra; mas não destruirei de todo a casa de Jacó, diz o Senhor.9 Porque eis que darei ordem, e sacudirei a casa de Israel entre todas as nações, assim como se sacode grão no crivo, sem que caia na terra um só grão.10 Todos os pecadores do meu povo morrerão à espada, os que dizem: Não nos alcançará nem nos encontrará o mal.11 Naquele dia tornarei a levantar o tabernáculo caído de Davi, e repararei as suas brechas, e tornarei a levantar as suas ruínas, e o edificarei como nos dias da antiguidade;12 Para que possuam o restante de Edom, e todos os gentios que são chamados pelo meu nome, diz o Senhor, que faz essas coisas.13 Eis que vêm dias, diz o Senhor, em que o que lavra alcançará ao que sega, e o que pisa as uvas ao que lança a semente; e os montes destilarão mosto, e todos os outeiros se derreterão.14 E trarei do cativeiro meu povo Israel, e eles reedificarão as cidades assoladas, e nelas habitarão, e plantarão vinhas, e beberão o seu vinho, e farão pomares, e lhes comerão o fruto.15 E plantá-los-ei na sua terra, e não serão mais arrancados da sua terra que lhes dei, diz o Senhor teu Deus.

1 I saw the Lord standing upon the altar; and he said, Smite the capital, that the sills may quake; and break them in pieces over the head of all of them; and their posterity will I slay with the sword: there shall not flee away from them one that fleeth, and there shall not escape from them one that is saved.2 Though they were to creep down into the nether world, thence would my hand fetch them; and though they were to climb up to the heavens, thence would I bring them down;3 And though they were to hide themselves on the top of Carmel, thence would I search and take them out; and though they were to conceal themselves from before my eyes in the bottom of the sea, thence would I command the serpent, that he should bite them;4 And though they were to go into captivity before their enemies, thence would I command the sword, that it should slay them: and I will set my eye upon them for evil, and not for good.5 And the Lord Eternal of hosts it is that toucheth the earth, and she melteth away, and all that dwell thereon shall mourn; and she riseth up like a stream wholly; and she sinketh like the stream of Egypt;6 That buildeth in the heavens his steps, and hath founded his vault over the earth; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out over the face of the earth: The Lord is his name.7 Are ye not like the children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the Lord: have I not brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord Eternal are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; save only that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord.9 For, lo, I will give the command, and I will shake about among all the nations the house of Israel, as one shaketh things in a sieve, while not the least piece falleth down upon the earth.10 By the sword shall die all the sinners of my people, who say, The evil will not come near us, nor hasten along for our sake.11 On that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David which is fallen; and I will close up its breaches; and its ruins will I raise up, and I will rebuild it as in days of old:12 In order that they may take possession of the remnant of Edom, and of all the nations, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doth this.13 Behold, days are coming, saith the Lord, when the ploughman shall come close up to the harvester, and the treader of the grapes to the one that scattereth the seed: and the mountains shall drop with sweet new wine, and all the hills shall melt away.14 And I will bring back the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall build the wasted cities, and dwell therein; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink their wine; and they shall lay out gardens, and eat their fruit.
