1 E orou Jonas ao Senhor, seu Deus, das entranhas do peixe.2 E disse: Na minha angústia clamei ao Senhor, e ele me respondeu; do ventre da sepultura gritei, e tu ouviste a minha voz.3 Porque tu me lançaste no profundo, no coração dos mares, e a corrente das águas me cercou; todas as tuas ondas e as tuas vagas têm passado por cima de mim.4 E eu disse: Lançado estou de diante dos teus olhos; todavia tornarei a ver o teu santo templo.5 As águas me cercaram até à alma, o abismo me rodeou, e as algas se enrolaram na minha cabeça.6 Eu desci até aos fundamentos dos montes; a terra me encerrou para sempre com os seus ferrolhos; mas tu fizeste subir a minha vida da perdição, ó Senhor meu Deus.7 Quando desfalecia em mim a minha alma, lembrei-me do Senhor; e entrou a ti a minha oração, no teu santo templo.8 Os que observam as falsas vaidades deixam a sua misericórdia.9 Mas eu te oferecerei sacrifício com a voz do agradecimento; o que votei pagarei. Do Senhor vem a salvação.10 Falou, pois, o Senhor ao peixe, e este vomitou a Jonas na terra seca.

1 (2:2) Then prayed Jonah unto the Lord his God out of the belly of the fish.2 (2:3) And he said, I called from the midst of my distress unto the Lord, and he hath answered me: out of the depth of the grave have I cried, and thou hast heard my voice.3 (2:4) For thou hast cast me into the deep, in the heart of the seas; and the stream compasseth me about: all thy billows and thy waves have passed over me.4 (2:5) And I thought indeed, I am driven out from before thy eyes: yet I again shall look toward thy holy temple.5 (2:6) The waters surrounded me, to the peril of my life; the deep compassed me about: seaweeds were bound about my head.6 (2:7) To the bottoms of the mountains did I go down; the earth closed her bars about me for ever: when thou broughtest up my life from the pit, O Lord my God!7 (2:8) When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came unto thee, unto thy holy temple.8 (2:9) They that guard false vanities forsake the source of their kindness.9 (2:10) But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; that which I have vowed will I pay; for help is with the Lord.10 (2:11) And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
