For every species, both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by the human species.
But no man is able to tame the tongue of men, an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
By long-suffering a ruler is persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the bone.
LORD will cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaks great things,
who have said, With our tongue will we prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?
I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue. I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked man is before me.
9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of the heavenly, and the earthly, and the sub-earthly,
11 and that every tongue should acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
If I speak with the tongues of men and of heavenly agents, but have not love, I have become sounding brass, or a clashing cymbal.
For we all stumble in many things. If any man does not stumble in word, this is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
But I say to you, that every idle word, whatever men may speak, they will render account about it in the day of judgment.
For from thy words thou will be justified, and from thy words thou will be condemned.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat the fruit of it.
Destroy, O LORD, divide their tongue, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
And my tongue shall talk of thy righteousness [and] of thy praise all the day long.
The lips of truth shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
What man is he who desires life, and loves [many] days, that he may see good?
Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking deceit.
There is he who speaks rashly like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is health.
9 By it we bless the God and Father, and by it we curse men, who were made according to a likeness of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and curse. My brothers, these things ought not to happen this way.
11 Does the spring pour out from the same opening the sweet and the bitter?
12 A fig tree, my brothers, cannot make olives, or a grapevine figs. In the same way, no one spring makes water salty and sweet.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou know it altogether.
Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is considered wise. When he shuts his lips, he is prudent.
If any man among you seems to be religious, not bridling his tongue but deceiving his heart, this man's religion is futile.
Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.
The mouth of a righteous man talks of wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.
The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.
Transgression is not lacking in the multitude of words, but he who refrains his lips does wisely.
3 Behold we put bits into the mouths of horses for them to obey us, and we guide about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, being so great and driven by fierce winds, are guided about by a very small rudder, wherever the impulse of the man who steers determines.
5 So also the tongue is a little body-part, and boasts greatly. Behold a little fire, how much wood it kindles.
6 And the tongue is a fire, the world of unrighteousness. Thus, the tongue is made to lead among our body-parts, defiling the whole body, and setting the cycle of nature on fire, and being set on fire by hell.
5 And LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men built.
6 And LORD said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is what they begin to do. And now nothing will be withheld from them, which they propose to do.
7 Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand each other's speech.
8 So LORD scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
9 Therefore the name of it was called Babel, because LORD there confounded the language of all the earth, and from there LORD scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
