1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses'father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;2 Then Jethro, Moses'father in law, took Zipporah, Moses'wife, after he had sent her back,3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:5 And Jethro, Moses'father in law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:6 And he said to Moses, I your father in law Jethro am come to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.7 And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.8 And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel' sake, and all the travail that had come on them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.12 And Jethro, Moses'father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses'father in law before God.13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.14 And when Moses'father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that you do to the people? why sit you yourself alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to even?15 And Moses said to his father in law, Because the people come to me to inquire of God:16 When they have a matter, they come to me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.17 And Moses'father in law said to him, The thing that you do is not good.18 You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you: for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it yourself alone.19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you: Be you for the people to God-ward, that you may bring the causes to God:20 And you shall teach them ordinances and laws, and shall show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for yourself, and they shall bear the burden with you.23 If you shall do this thing, and God command you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
1 MOREOVER, the word of the Lord said unto me: Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen, concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived and bare a son. Then said the Lord to me: Call his name, Maher-shalal-hash-baz.4 For behold, the child shall not have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, before the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.5 The Lord spake also unto me again, saying:6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.9 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear all ye of far countries; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to naught; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us.11 For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.13 Sanctify the Lord of Hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.15 And many among them shall stumble and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.17 And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts, which dwelleth in Mount Zion.19 And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter-should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead?20 To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.21 And they shall pass through it hardly bestead and hungry; and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.22 And they shall look unto the earth and behold trouble, and darkness, dimness of anguish, and shall be driven to darkness.
