1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by; to whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit you down here. And they sat down.

3 And he said to the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, sells a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech':

4 And I thought to advertise you, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it: but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside you; and I am after you. And he said, I will redeem it.

5 Then said Boaz, What day you buy the field of the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.

6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance: redeem you my right to yourself; for I cannot redeem it.

7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel.

8 Therefore the kinsman said to Boaz, Buy it for you. So he drew off his shoe.

9 And Boaz said to the elders, and to all the people, You are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech', and all that was Chilion' and Mahlon', of the hand of Naomi.

10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brothers, and from the gate of his place: you are witnesses this day.

11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do you worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

12 And let your house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give you of this young woman.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in to her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.

14 And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which has not left you this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.

15 And he shall be to you a restorer of your life, and a nourisher of your old age: for your daughter in law, which loves you, which is better to you than seven sons, has born him.

16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse to it.

17 And the women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,

19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,

20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,

21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,

22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

1 BOOZ adunque salì alla porta, e vi si pose a sedere. Ed ecco, colui che avea la ragione della consanguinità, del quale Booz avea parlato, passò. E Booz gli disse: O tu, tale, vieni qua, e poniti qui a sedere. Ed egli andò, e si pose a sedere.

2 E Booz prese dieci uomini degli Anziani della città, e disse loro: Sedete qui; ed essi si misero a sedere.

3 Poi Booz disse a colui che avea la ragion della consanguinità: Naomi, ch’è ritornata dalle contrade di Moab, ha venduta la possessione del campo, ch’era di Elimelec, nostro fratello;

4 laonde io ho detto di fartene motto, e di dirti che tu l’acquisti in presenza di costoro che seggono qui, e in presenza degli Anziani del mio popolo; se tu la vuoi riscuotere, per ragione di consanguinità, fallo; ma, se tu non la vuoi riscuotere, dichiaramelo, acciocchè io il sappia; perciocchè non v’è alcun altro per riscuoterla, se non tu, ed io dopo te. Allora colui disse: Io la riscuoterò.

5 E Booz gli disse: Nel giorno che tu acquisterai il campo della mano di Naomi, tu l’acquisterai ancora da Rut Moabita, moglie del morto, per suscitare il nome del morto sopra la sua eredità.

6 Ma, colui che avea la ragione della consanguinità, disse: Io non posso usare la ragione della consanguinità per me; che talora io non dissipi la mia eredità; usa tu la mia ragione della consanguinità, per riscuoterla; perciocchè io non posso farlo.

7 Or ab antico v’era questa usanza, che, in caso di riscatto per ragione di consanguinità, e di trasportamento di ragione, per fermar tutto l’affare, l’uomo si traeva la scarpa, e la dava al suo prossimo; e ciò serviva di testimonianza in Israele.

8 Così, dopo che colui che avea la ragione della consanguinità ebbe detto a Booz: Acquistati tu quel campo, egli si trasse la scarpa

9 E Booz disse agli Anziani, e a tutto il popolo: Voi siete oggi testimoni che io ho acquistato dalla mano di Naomi tutto ciò ch’era di Elimelec, e tutto ciò ch’era di Chilion e di Malon;

10 e che ancora mi ho acquistata per moglie Rut Moabita, moglie di Malon, per suscitare il nome del morto sopra la sua eredità; acciocchè il nome del morto non sia spento d’infra i suoi fratelli, e dalla porta del suo luogo. Voi ne siete oggi testimoni.

11 E tutto il popolo ch’era nella porta, e gli Anziani, dissero: Sì, noi ne siamo testimoni. Il Signore faccia che la moglie, ch’entra in casa tua, sia come Rachele e come Lea, le quali edificarono amendue la casa d’Israele; fatti pur possente in Efrata, e fa’ che il tuo nome sia celebrato in Bet-lehem.

12 E della progenie, che il Signore ti darà di cotesta giovane, sia la casa tua come la casa di Fares, il quale Tamar partorì a Giuda

13 Booz adunque prese Rut, ed ella gli fu moglie: ed egli entrò da lei, e il Signore le fece grazia d’ingravidare; e partorì un figliuolo.

14 E le donne dissero a Naomi: Benedetto sia il Signore, il quale non ha permesso che oggi ti sia mancato uno che avesse la ragione della consanguinità; il cui nome sia celebrato in Israele.

15 E siati esso per ristorarti l’anima, e per sostentar la tua vecchiezza; conciossiachè la tua nuora, la qual ti ama, e ti val meglio che sette figliuoli, abbia partorito questo fanciullo.

16 E Naomi prese il fanciullo, e se lo recò al seno, e gli fu in luogo di balia.

17 E le vicine gli posero nome, quando fu detto: Un figliuolo è nato a Naomi; e lo chiamarono Obed. Esso fu padre d’Isai, padre di Davide.

18 Or queste sono le generazioni di Fares: Fares generò Hesron;

19 ed Hesron generò Ram; e Ram generò Amminadab;

20 e Amminadab generò Naasson; e Naasson generò Salmon;

21 e Salmon generò Booz; e Booz generò Obed;

22 e Obed generò Isai; ed Isai generò Davide
