1 Subiu o Anjo do Senhor de Gilgal a Boquim e disse: Do Egito vos fiz subir e vos trouxe à terra que, sob juramento, havia prometido a vossos pais. Eu disse: nunca invalidarei a minha aliança convosco. 2 Vós, porém, não fareis aliança com os moradores desta terra; antes, derribareis os seus altares; contudo, não obedecestes à minha voz. Que é isso que fizestes? 3 Pelo que também eu disse: não os expulsarei de diante de vós; antes, vos serão por adversários, e os seus deuses vos serão laços. 4 Sucedeu que, falando o Anjo do Senhor estas palavras a todos os filhos de Israel, levantou o povo a sua voz e chorou. 5 Daí, chamarem a esse lugar Boquim; e sacrificaram ali ao Senhor.

6 Havendo Josué despedido o povo, foram-se os filhos de Israel, cada um à sua herança, para possuírem a terra. 7 Serviu o povo ao Senhor todos os dias de Josué e todos os dias dos anciãos que ainda sobreviveram por muito tempo depois de Josué e que viram todas as grandes obras feitas pelo Senhor a Israel. 8 Faleceu Josué, filho de Num, servo do Senhor, com a idade de cento e dez anos; 9 sepultaram-no no limite da sua herança, em Timnate-Heres, na região montanhosa de Efraim, ao norte do monte Gaás.

10 Foi também congregada a seus pais toda aquela geração; e outra geração após eles se levantou, que não conhecia o Senhor, nem tampouco as obras que fizera a Israel. 11 Então, fizeram os filhos de Israel o que era mau perante o Senhor; pois serviram aos baalins. 12 Deixaram o Senhor, Deus de seus pais, que os tirara da terra do Egito, e foram-se após outros deuses, dentre os deuses das gentes que havia ao redor deles, e os adoraram, e provocaram o Senhor à ira. 13 Porquanto deixaram o Senhor e serviram a Baal e a Astarote. 14 Pelo que a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Israel e os deu na mão dos espoliadores, que os pilharam; e os entregou na mão dos seus inimigos ao redor; e não mais puderam resistir a eles. 15 Por onde quer que saíam, a mão do Senhor era contra eles para seu mal, como o Senhor lhes dissera e jurara; e estavam em grande aperto.

16 Suscitou o Senhor juízes, que os livraram da mão dos que os pilharam. 17 Contudo, não obedeceram aos seus juízes; antes, se prostituíram após outros deuses e os adoraram. Depressa se desviaram do caminho por onde andaram seus pais na obediência dos mandamentos do Senhor; e não fizeram como eles. 18 Quando o Senhor lhes suscitava juízes, o Senhor era com o juiz e os livrava da mão dos seus inimigos, todos os dias daquele juiz; porquanto o Senhor se compadecia deles ante os seus gemidos, por causa dos que os apertavam e oprimiam. 19 Sucedia, porém, que, falecendo o juiz, reincidiam e se tornavam piores do que seus pais, seguindo após outros deuses, servindo-os e adorando-os eles; nada deixavam das suas obras, nem da obstinação dos seus caminhos. 20 Pelo que a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Israel; e disse: Porquanto este povo transgrediu a minha aliança que eu ordenara a seus pais e não deu ouvidos à minha voz, 21 também eu não expulsarei mais de diante dele nenhuma das nações que Josué deixou quando morreu; 22 para, por elas, pôr Israel à prova, se guardará ou não o caminho do Senhor, como seus pais o guardaram. 23 Assim, o Senhor deixou ficar aquelas nações e não as expulsou logo, nem as entregou na mão de Josué.

1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

2 And you shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; you shall throw down their altars: but you have not obeyed my voice: why have you done this?

3 Why I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.

4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to the LORD.

6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man to his inheritance to possess the land.

7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.

8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

10 And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:

12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn to them: and they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

17 And yet they would not listen to their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves to them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.

18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people has transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not listened to my voice;

21 I also will not from now on drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

23 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
