1 Efraim apascenta o vento e persegue o vento leste todo o dia; multiplica mentiras e destruição e faz aliança com a Assíria, e o azeite se leva ao Egito. 2 O Senhor também com Judá tem contenda e castigará Jacó segundo o seu proceder; segundo as suas obras, o recompensará.
3 No ventre, pegou do calcanhar de seu irmão; no vigor da sua idade, lutou com Deus; 4 lutou com o anjo e prevaleceu; chorou e lhe pediu mercê; em Betel, achou a Deus, e ali falou Deus conosco. 5 O Senhor, o Deus dos Exércitos, o Senhor é o seu nome; 6 converte-te a teu Deus, guarda o amor e o juízo e no teu Deus espera sempre. 7 Efraim, mercador, tem nas mãos balança enganosa e ama a opressão; 8 mas diz: Contudo, me tenho enriquecido e adquirido grandes bens; em todos esses meus esforços, não acharão em mim iniquidade alguma, nada que seja pecado. 9 Mas eu sou o Senhor, teu Deus, desde a terra do Egito; eu ainda te farei habitar em tendas, como nos dias da festa. 10 Falei aos profetas e multipliquei as visões; e, pelo ministério dos profetas, propus símiles.
11 Se há em Gileade transgressão, pura vaidade são eles; se em Gilgal sacrificam bois, os seus altares são como montões de pedra nos sulcos dos campos. 12 Jacó fugiu para a terra da Síria, e Israel serviu por uma mulher e por ela guardou o gado. 13 Mas o Senhor, por meio de um profeta, fez subir a Israel do Egito e, por um profeta, foi ele guardado. 14 Efraim mui amargamente provocou à ira; portanto, o Senhor deixará ficar sobre ele o sangue por ele derramado; e fará cair sobre ele o seu opróbrio.

1 Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.2 The LORD has also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:4 Yes, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication to him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us;5 Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial.6 Therefore turn you to your God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on your God continually.7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labors they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.9 And I that am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt will yet make you to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yes, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood on him, and his reproach shall his LORD return to him.
