1 Depois, chamou Jacó a seus filhos e disse: Ajuntai-vos, e eu vos farei saber o que vos há de acontecer nos dias vindouros:

2 Ajuntai-vos e ouvi, filhos de Jacó;

ouvi a Israel, vosso pai.

3 Rúben, tu és meu primogênito,

minha força e as primícias do meu vigor,

o mais excelente em altivez e o mais excelente em poder.

4 Impetuoso como a água, não serás o mais excelente,

porque subiste ao leito de teu pai

e o profanaste; subiste à minha cama.

5 Simeão e Levi são irmãos;

as suas espadas são instrumentos de violência.

6 No seu conselho, não entre minha alma;

com o seu agrupamento, minha glória não se ajunte;

porque no seu furor mataram homens,

e na sua vontade perversa jarretaram touros.

7 Maldito seja o seu furor, pois era forte,

e a sua ira, pois era dura;

dividi-los-ei em Jacó

e os espalharei em Israel.

8 Judá, teus irmãos te louvarão;

a tua mão estará sobre a cerviz de teus inimigos;

os filhos de teu pai se inclinarão a ti.

9 Judá é leãozinho;

da presa subiste, filho meu.

Encurva-se e deita-se como leão

e como leoa; quem o despertará?

10 O cetro não se arredará de Judá,

nem o bastão de entre seus pés,

até que venha Siló;

e a ele obedecerão os povos.

11 Ele amarrará o seu jumentinho à vide

e o filho da sua jumenta, à videira mais excelente;

lavará as suas vestes no vinho

e a sua capa, em sangue de uvas.

12 Os seus olhos serão cintilantes de vinho,

e os dentes, brancos de leite.

13 Zebulom habitará na praia dos mares

e servirá de porto de navios,

e o seu limite se estenderá até Sidom.

14 Issacar é jumento de fortes ossos,

de repouso entre os rebanhos de ovelhas.

15 Viu que o repouso era bom

e que a terra era deliciosa;

baixou os ombros à carga

e sujeitou-se ao trabalho servil.

16 Dã julgará o seu povo,

como uma das tribos de Israel.

17 Dã será serpente junto ao caminho,

uma víbora junto à vereda,

que morde os talões do cavalo

e faz cair o seu cavaleiro por detrás.

18 A tua salvação espero, ó Senhor!

19 Gade, uma guerrilha o acometerá;

mas ele a acometerá por sua retaguarda.

20 Aser, o seu pão será abundante

e ele motivará delícias reais.

21 Naftali é uma gazela solta;

ele profere palavras formosas.

22 José é um ramo frutífero,

ramo frutífero junto à fonte;

seus galhos se estendem sobre o muro.

23 Os flecheiros lhe dão amargura,

atiram contra ele e o aborrecem.

24 O seu arco, porém, permanece firme,

e os seus braços são feitos ativos

pelas mãos do Poderoso de Jacó,

sim, pelo Pastor e pela Pedra de Israel,

25 pelo Deus de teu pai, o qual te ajudará,

e pelo Todo-Poderoso, o qual te abençoará

com bênçãos dos altos céus,

com bênçãos das profundezas,

com bênçãos dos seios e da madre.

26 As bênçãos de teu pai

excederão as bênçãos de meus pais

até ao cimo dos montes eternos;

estejam elas sobre a cabeça de José

e sobre o alto da cabeça do que foi distinguido entre seus irmãos.

27 Benjamim é lobo que despedaça;

pela manhã devora a presa

e à tarde reparte o despojo.

28 São estas as doze tribos de Israel; e isto é o que lhes falou seu pai quando os abençoou; a cada um deles abençoou segundo a bênção que lhe cabia. 29 Depois, lhes ordenou, dizendo: Eu me reúno ao meu povo; sepultai-me, com meus pais, na caverna que está no campo de Efrom, o heteu, 30 na caverna que está no campo de Macpela, fronteiro a Manre, na terra de Canaã, a qual Abraão comprou de Efrom com aquele campo, em posse de sepultura. 31 Ali sepultaram Abraão e Sara, sua mulher; ali sepultaram Isaque e Rebeca, sua mulher; e ali sepultei Lia; 32 o campo e a caverna que nele está, comprados aos filhos de Hete. 33 Tendo Jacó acabado de dar determinações a seus filhos, recolheu os pés na cama, e expirou, e foi reunido ao seu povo.

1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said: Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the latter days.

2 Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob;

And hearken unto Israel your father.

3 Reuben, thou art my first-born, my might, and the beginning of my strength;

The pre-eminence of dignity, and the pre-eminence of power.

4 Boiling over as water, thou shalt not have the pre-eminence;

Because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed;

Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

5 Simeon and Levi are brethren;

Weapons of violence are their swords.

6 O my soul, come not thou into their council;

Unto their assembly, my glory, be not thou united;

For in their anger they slew a man,

And in their self-will they hocked an ox.

7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce;

And their wrath, for it was cruel:

I will divide them in Jacob,

And scatter them in Israel.

8 Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise:

Thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies;

Thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee.

9 Judah is a lion’s whelp;

From the prey, my son, thou art gone up:

He stooped down, he couched as a lion,

And as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,

Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,

Until Shiloh come;

And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be.

11 Binding his foal unto the vine,

And his ass’s colt unto the choice vine;

He hath washed his garments in wine,

And his vesture in the blood of grapes:

12 His eyes shall be red with wine,

And his teeth white with milk.

13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea;

And he shall be for a haven of ships;

And his border shall be upon Sidon.

14 Issachar is a strong ass,

Couching down between the sheepfolds:

15 And he saw a resting-place that it was good,

And the land that it was pleasant;

And he bowed his shoulder to bear,

And became a servant under taskwork.

16 Dan shall judge his people,

As one of the tribes of Israel.

17 Dan shall be a serpent in the way,

An adder in the path,

That biteth the horse’s heels,

So that his rider falleth backward.

18 I have waited for thy salvation, O Jehovah.

19 Gad, a troop shall press upon him;

But he shall press upon their heel.

20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat,

And he shall yield royal dainties.

21 Naphtali is a hind let loose:

He giveth goodly words.

22 Joseph is a fruitful bough,

A fruitful bough by a fountain;

His branches run over the wall.

23 The archers have sorely grieved him,

And shot at him, and persecuted him:

24 But his bow abode in strength,

And the arms of his hands were made strong,

By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob

(From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel),

25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee,

And by the Almighty, who shall bless thee,

With blessings of heaven above,

Blessings of the deep that coucheth beneath,

Blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.

26 The blessings of thy father

Have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors

Unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills:

They shall be on the head of Joseph,

And on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

27 Benjamin is a wolf that raveneth:

In the morning he shall devour the prey,

And at even he shall divide the spoil.

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a burying-place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth. 33 And when Jacob made an end of charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: "Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.

2 "Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel.

3 "Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power.

4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father's bed, onto my couch and defiled it.

5 "Simeon and Levi are brothers — their swords "are weapons of violence.

6 Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.

7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel.

8 "Judah, "your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons will bow down to you.

9 You are a lion's cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness —who dares to rouse him?

10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, "until he to whom it belongs "shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

11 He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.

12 His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk. [^5]

13 "Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships; his border will extend toward Sidon.

14 "Issachar is a rawboned "donkey lying down among the sheep pens. [^7]

15 When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor.

16 "Dan "will provide justice for his people as one of the tribes of Israel.

17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse's heels so that its rider tumbles backward.

18 "I look for your deliverance, LORD.

19 "Gad "will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels.

20 "Asher's food will be rich; he will provide delicacies fit for a king.

21 "Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns. [^10]

22 "Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall. [^11]

23 With bitterness archers attacked him; they shot at him with hostility.

24 But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed "limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,

25 because of your father's God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, "who blesses you with blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below, blessings of the breast and womb.

26 Your father's blessings are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, than "the bounty of the age-old hills. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among "his brothers.

27 "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder."

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.

29 Then he gave them these instructions: "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.

32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites. ""

33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
