A oração de Jonas no ventre do peixe

1 Então, Jonas, do ventre do peixe, orou ao Senhor, seu Deus, 2 e disse:

Na minha angústia, clamei ao Senhor,

e ele me respondeu;

do ventre do abismo, gritei,

e tu me ouviste a voz.

3 Pois me lançaste no profundo,

no coração dos mares,

e a corrente das águas me cercou;

todas as tuas ondas e as tuas vagas

passaram por cima de mim.

4 Então, eu disse: lançado estou

de diante dos teus olhos;

tornarei, porventura, a ver

o teu santo templo?

5 As águas me cercaram até à alma,

o abismo me rodeou;

e as algas se enrolaram na minha cabeça.

6 Desci até aos fundamentos dos montes,

desci até à terra,

cujos ferrolhos se correram sobre mim, para sempre;

contudo, fizeste subir da sepultura a minha vida,

ó Senhor, meu Deus!

7 Quando, dentro de mim, desfalecia a minha alma,

eu me lembrei do Senhor;

e subiu a ti a minha oração,

no teu santo templo.

8 Os que se entregam à idolatria vã

abandonam aquele que lhes é misericordioso.

9 Mas, com a voz do agradecimento,

eu te oferecerei sacrifício;

o que votei pagarei.

Ao Senhor pertence a salvação!

10 Falou, pois, o Senhor ao peixe, e este vomitou a Jonas na terra.

1 Then Jonah prayed unto Jehovah his God out of the fish’s belly. 2 And he said,

I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah,

And he answered me;

Out of the belly of Sheol cried I,

And thou heardest my voice.

3 For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas,

And the flood was round about me;

All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.

4 And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes;

Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul;

The deep was round about me;

The weeds were wrapped about my head.

6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains;

The earth with its bars closed upon me for ever:

Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God.

7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah;

And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple.

8 They that regard lying vanities

Forsake their own mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;

I will pay that which I have vowed.

Salvation is of Jehovah.

10 And Jehovah spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.

2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

3 You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.

4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'

5 The engulfing waters threatened me, "the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit.

7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

8 "Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them.

9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD.'"

10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
