17 Porque o mesmo Herodes, por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão Filipe (porquanto Herodes se casara com ela), mandara prender a João e atá-lo no cárcere. 18 Pois João lhe dizia: Não te é lícito possuir a mulher de teu irmão.

17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.

18 For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
