1 Segui o amor e procurai, com zelo, os dons espirituais, mas principalmente que profetizeis. 2 Pois quem fala em outra língua não fala a homens, senão a Deus, visto que ninguém o entende, e em espírito fala mistérios. 3 Mas o que profetiza fala aos homens, edificando, exortando e consolando. 4 O que fala em outra língua a si mesmo se edifica, mas o que profetiza edifica a igreja. 5 Eu quisera que vós todos falásseis em outras línguas; muito mais, porém, que profetizásseis; pois quem profetiza é superior ao que fala em outras línguas, salvo se as interpretar, para que a igreja receba edificação.

6 Agora, porém, irmãos, se eu for ter convosco falando em outras línguas, em que vos aproveitarei, se vos não falar por meio de revelação, ou de ciência, ou de profecia, ou de doutrina? 7 É assim que instrumentos inanimados, como a flauta ou a cítara, quando emitem sons, se não os derem bem distintos, como se reconhecerá o que se toca na flauta ou cítara? 8 Pois também se a trombeta der som incerto, quem se preparará para a batalha? 9 Assim, vós, se, com a língua, não disserdes palavra compreensível, como se entenderá o que dizeis? Porque estareis como se falásseis ao ar. 10 Há, sem dúvida, muitos tipos de vozes no mundo; nenhum deles, contudo, sem sentido. 11 Se eu, pois, ignorar a significação da voz, serei estrangeiro para aquele que fala; e ele, estrangeiro para mim. 12 Assim, também vós, visto que desejais dons espirituais, procurai progredir, para a edificação da igreja.

13 Pelo que, o que fala em outra língua deve orar para que a possa interpretar. 14 Porque, se eu orar em outra língua, o meu espírito ora de fato, mas a minha mente fica infrutífera. 15 Que farei, pois? Orarei com o espírito, mas também orarei com a mente; cantarei com o espírito, mas também cantarei com a mente. 16 E, se tu bendisseres apenas em espírito, como dirá o indouto o amém depois da tua ação de graças? Visto que não entende o que dizes; 17 porque tu, de fato, dás bem as graças, mas o outro não é edificado. 18 Dou graças a Deus, porque falo em outras línguas mais do que todos vós. 19 Contudo, prefiro falar na igreja cinco palavras com o meu entendimento, para instruir outros, a falar dez mil palavras em outra língua.

20 Irmãos, não sejais meninos no juízo; na malícia, sim, sede crianças; quanto ao juízo, sede homens amadurecidos. 21 Na lei está escrito:

Falarei a este povo por homens de outras línguas e por lábios de outros povos, e nem assim me ouvirão, diz o Senhor.

22 De sorte que as línguas constituem um sinal não para os crentes, mas para os incrédulos; mas a profecia não é para os incrédulos, e sim para os que creem. 23 Se, pois, toda a igreja se reunir no mesmo lugar, e todos se puserem a falar em outras línguas, no caso de entrarem indoutos ou incrédulos, não dirão, porventura, que estais loucos? 24 Porém, se todos profetizarem, e entrar algum incrédulo ou indouto, é ele por todos convencido e por todos julgado; 25 tornam-se-lhe manifestos os segredos do coração, e, assim, prostrando-se com a face em terra, adorará a Deus, testemunhando que Deus está, de fato, no meio de vós.

26 Que fazer, pois, irmãos? Quando vos reunis, um tem salmo, outro, doutrina, este traz revelação, aquele, outra língua, e ainda outro, interpretação. Seja tudo feito para edificação. 27 No caso de alguém falar em outra língua, que não sejam mais do que dois ou quando muito três, e isto sucessivamente, e haja quem interprete. 28 Mas, não havendo intérprete, fique calado na igreja, falando consigo mesmo e com Deus. 29 Tratando-se de profetas, falem apenas dois ou três, e os outros julguem. 30 Se, porém, vier revelação a outrem que esteja assentado, cale-se o primeiro. 31 Porque todos podereis profetizar, um após outro, para todos aprenderem e serem consolados. 32 Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos próprios profetas; 33 porque Deus não é de confusão, e sim de paz. Como em todas as igrejas dos santos, 34 conservem-se as mulheres caladas nas igrejas, porque não lhes é permitido falar; mas estejam submissas como também a lei o determina. 35 Se, porém, querem aprender alguma coisa, interroguem, em casa, a seu próprio marido; porque para a mulher é vergonhoso falar na igreja. 36 Porventura, a palavra de Deus se originou no meio de vós ou veio ela exclusivamente para vós outros?

37 Se alguém se considera profeta ou espiritual, reconheça ser mandamento do Senhor o que vos escrevo. 38 E, se alguém o ignorar, será ignorado.

39 Portanto, meus irmãos, procurai com zelo o dom de profetizar e não proibais o falar em outras línguas. 40 Tudo, porém, seja feito com decência e ordem.

1 Keep on pursuing love, and keep on desiring spiritual gifts, especially the ability to prophesy.2 For the person who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands him, because he is speaking secrets in the Spirit.3 But the person who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding, encouragement, and comfort.4 The person who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the person who prophesies builds the church up.5 Now I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but especially that you could prophesy. The person who prophesies is more important than the person who speaks in a tongue, unless he interprets it so that the church may be built up.6 Indeed, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what good will I be to you unless I speak to you in some revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching?7 In the same way, lifeless instruments like the flute or harp produce sounds. But if there's no difference in the notes, how can a person tell what tune is being played?8 For example, if a bugle doesn't sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?9 In the same way, unless you speak an intelligible message with your tongue, how will anyone know what is being said? You'll be talking into the air!10 There are, I suppose, many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.11 If I don't know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.12 In the same way, since you're so desirous of spiritual gifts, you must keep on desiring them for the upbuilding of the church.13 Therefore, the person who speaks in a tongue should pray for the ability to interpret it.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is not productive.15 What does this mean? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing psalms with my spirit, but I will also sing psalms with my mind.16 Otherwise, if you say a blessing with your spirit, how can an otherwise uneducated person say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you're saying?17 It's good for you to give thanks, but it does not build up the other person.18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.19 But in church I would rather speak five words with my mind to instruct others than 10,000 words in a tongue.20 Brothers, stop being children in your thinking. In evil be infants, but in thinking be adults.21 In the law it is written, "Through people of strange tonguesand through the mouths of foreigners I will speak to this people,but even then they will not listen to me,"declares the Lord.22 Tongues, then, are meant to be a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers, while prophecy is meant, not for unbelievers, but for believers.23 Now if the whole church gathers in the same place and everyone is speaking in tongues, when uneducated people or unbelievers come in, they will say that you are out of your mind, won't they?24 But if everyone is prophesying, when an unbeliever or an uneducated person comes in he will be convicted by all and examined by all.25 The secrets in his heart will become known, and so he will bow down to the ground and worship God, declaring, "God is truly among you!"26 What, then, does this mean, brothers? When you gather, everyone has a psalm, teaching, revelation, tongue, or interpretation. Everything must be done for upbuilding.27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, only two or three at the most should do so, one at a time, and somebody must interpret.28 If an interpreter is not present, he should remain silent in the church and speak to himself and God.29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.30 If a revelation is made to another person who is seated, the first person should be silent.31 For everyone can prophesy in turn, so that everyone can be instructed and everyone can be encouraged.32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets,33 for God is not a God of disorder but of peace.As in all the churches of the saints,34 the women must keep silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak out, but must place themselves in submission, as the law also says.35 If they want to learn anything, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is inappropriate for a woman to speak out in church.36 Did God's word originate with you? Are you the only people it has reached?37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he must acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command.38 But if anyone ignores this, he should be ignored.39 Therefore, my brothers, desire the ability to prophesy, and do not prevent others from speaking in tongues.40 But everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.
