1 Fiel é a palavra: se alguém aspira ao episcopado, excelente obra almeja. 2 É necessário, portanto, que o bispo seja irrepreensível, esposo de uma só mulher, temperante, sóbrio, modesto, hospitaleiro, apto para ensinar; 3 não dado ao vinho, não violento, porém cordato, inimigo de contendas, não avarento; 4 e que governe bem a própria casa, criando os filhos sob disciplina, com todo o respeito 5 (pois, se alguém não sabe governar a própria casa, como cuidará da igreja de Deus?); 6 não seja neófito, para não suceder que se ensoberbeça e incorra na condenação do diabo. 7 Pelo contrário, é necessário que ele tenha bom testemunho dos de fora, a fim de não cair no opróbrio e no laço do diabo.

8 Semelhantemente, quanto a diáconos, é necessário que sejam respeitáveis, de uma só palavra, não inclinados a muito vinho, não cobiçosos de sórdida ganância, 9 conservando o mistério da fé com a consciência limpa. 10 Também sejam estes primeiramente experimentados; e, se se mostrarem irrepreensíveis, exerçam o diaconato. 11 Da mesma sorte, quanto a mulheres, é necessário que sejam elas respeitáveis, não maldizentes, temperantes e fiéis em tudo. 12 O diácono seja marido de uma só mulher e governe bem seus filhos e a própria casa. 13 Pois os que desempenharem bem o diaconato alcançam para si mesmos justa preeminência e muita intrepidez na fé em Cristo Jesus.

14 Escrevo-te estas coisas, esperando ir ver-te em breve; 15 para que, se eu tardar, fiques ciente de como se deve proceder na casa de Deus, que é a igreja do Deus vivo, coluna e baluarte da verdade. 16 Evidentemente, grande é o mistério da piedade:

Aquele que foi manifestado na carne

foi justificado em espírito,

contemplado por anjos,

pregado entre os gentios,

crido no mundo,

recebido na glória.

1 This saying is trustworthy: The one who would an elder be, A noble task desires he.2 Therefore, an elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, stable, sensible, respectable, a lover of strangers, and teachable.3 He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but instead be gentle. He must not be argumentative or a lover of money.4 He must manage his own family well and have children who are submissive and respectful in every way.5 For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?6 He must not be a recent convert, or he might become arrogant and fall into the condemnation of the devil.7 He must be well thought of by outsiders, lest he fall into disgrace and the trap set for him by the devil.8 Deacons, too, must be serious. They must not be two-faced, addicted to wine, or greedy for money.9 They must hold firmly to the secret of the faith with clear consciences.10 But they must first be tested. Then, if they prove to be blameless, they may become deacons.11 Their wives must also be serious. They must not be gossips, but instead be stable and trustworthy in everything.12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife and must manage their children and their families well.13 Those deacons who serve well gain an excellent reputation for themselves and will have great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.14 I hope to come to you soon. However, I'm writing this to you15 in case I am delayed so that you may know how one is to behave in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.16 By common confession, the secret of our godly worship is great: In flesh was he revealed to sight,Kept righteous by the Spirit's might,Adored by angels singing. To nations was he manifest,Believing souls found peace and rest,Our Lord in heaven reigning!
