1 No segundo ano do rei Dario, no sexto mês, no primeiro dia do mês, veio a palavra do Senhor, por intermédio do profeta Ageu, a Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, governador de Judá, e a Josué, filho de Jozadaque, o sumo sacerdote, dizendo: 2 Assim fala o Senhor dos Exércitos: Este povo diz: Não veio ainda o tempo, o tempo em que a Casa do Senhor deve ser edificada. 3 Veio, pois, a palavra do Senhor, por intermédio do profeta Ageu, dizendo: 4 Acaso, é tempo de habitardes vós em casas apaineladas, enquanto esta casa permanece em ruínas? 5 Ora, pois, assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Considerai o vosso passado. 6 Tendes semeado muito e recolhido pouco; comeis, mas não chega para fartar-vos; bebeis, mas não dá para saciar-vos; vestis-vos, mas ninguém se aquece; e o que recebe salário, recebe-o para pô-lo num saquitel furado.

7 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Considerai o vosso passado. 8 Subi ao monte, trazei madeira e edificai a casa; dela me agradarei e serei glorificado, diz o Senhor. 9 Esperastes o muito, e eis que veio a ser pouco, e esse pouco, quando o trouxestes para casa, eu com um assopro o dissipei. Por quê? — diz o Senhor dos Exércitos; por causa da minha casa, que permanece em ruínas, ao passo que cada um de vós corre por causa de sua própria casa. 10 Por isso, os céus sobre vós retêm o seu orvalho, e a terra, os seus frutos. 11 Fiz vir a seca sobre a terra e sobre os montes; sobre o cereal, sobre o vinho, sobre o azeite e sobre o que a terra produz, como também sobre os homens, sobre os animais e sobre todo trabalho das mãos.

12 Então, Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, e Josué, filho de Jozadaque, o sumo sacerdote, e todo o resto do povo atenderam à voz do Senhor, seu Deus, e às palavras do profeta Ageu, as quais o Senhor, seu Deus, o tinha mandado dizer; e o povo temeu diante do Senhor. 13 Então, Ageu, o enviado do Senhor, falou ao povo, segundo a mensagem do Senhor, dizendo: Eu sou convosco, diz o Senhor. 14 O Senhor despertou o espírito de Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, governador de Judá, e o espírito de Josué, filho de Jozadaque, o sumo sacerdote, e o espírito do resto de todo o povo; eles vieram e se puseram ao trabalho na Casa do Senhor dos Exércitos, seu Deus, 15 ao vigésimo quarto dia do sexto mês.

1 IN THE second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying:

2 'Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying: This people say: The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built.'

3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying:

4 'Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your cieled houses, while this house lieth waste?

5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

6 Ye have sown much, and brought in little, ye eat, but ye have not enough, ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink, ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages for a bag with holes.

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

8 Go up to the hill-country, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of My house that lieth waste, while ye run every man for his own house.

10 Therefore over you the heaven hath kept back, so that there is no dew, and the earth hath kept back her produce.

11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.'

12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, hearkened unto the voice of the LORD their God, and unto the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people did fear before the LORD.

13 Then spoke Haggai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying: 'I am with you, saith the LORD.'

14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

15 in the four and twentieth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
