1 E Sucedeu que, acabando ele de falar com Saul, a alma de Jônatas se ligou com a alma de Davi; e Jônatas o amou como à sua própria alma. 2 E Saul, naquele dia, o tomou e não lhe permitiu que tornasse para casa de seu pai. 3 E Jônatas e Davi fizeram aliança; porque Jônatas o amava como à sua própria alma. 4 E Jônatas se despojou da capa que trazia sobre si e a deu a Davi, como também as suas vestes, até a sua espada, e o seu arco, e o seu cinto. 5 E saía Davi aonde quer que Saul o enviava e conduzia-se com prudência; e Saul o pôs sobre a gente de guerra, e era aceito aos olhos de todo o povo e até aos olhos dos servos de Saul.

6 Sucedeu, porém, que, vindo eles, quando Davi voltava de ferir os filisteus, as mulheres de todas as cidades de Israel saíram ao encontro do rei Saul, cantando e em danças, com adufes, com alegria e com instrumentos de música.

7 E as mulheres, tangendo, respondiam umas às outras e diziam: Saul feriu os seus milhares, porém Davi, os seus dez milhares. 8 Então, Saul se indignou muito, e aquela palavra pareceu mal aos seus olhos; e disse: Dez milhares deram a Davi, e a mim somente milhares; na verdade, que lhe falta, senão só o reino? 9 E, desde aquele dia em diante, Saul tinha Davi em suspeita.

10 E aconteceu, ao outro dia, que o mau espírito, da parte de Deus, se apoderou de Saul, e profetizava no meio da casa; e Davi tangia a harpa com a sua mão, como de dia em dia; Saul, porém, tinha na mão uma lança. 11 E Saul atirou com a lança, dizendo: Encravarei a Davi na parede. Porém Davi se desviou dele por duas vezes.

12 E temia Saul a Davi, porque o Senhor era com ele e se tinha retirado de Saul. 13 Pelo que Saul o desviou de si e o pôs por chefe de mil; e saía e entrava diante do povo. 14 E Davi se conduzia com prudência em todos os seus caminhos, e o Senhor era com ele. 15 Vendo, então, Saul que tão prudentemente se conduzia, tinha receio dele. 16 Porém todo o Israel e Judá amavam Davi, porquanto saía e entrava diante deles.

17 Pelo que Saul disse a Davi: Eis que Merabe, minha filha mais velha, te darei por mulher; sê-me somente filho valoroso e guerreia as guerras do Senhor (Porque Saul dizia consigo: Não seja contra ele a minha mão, mas, sim, a dos filisteus.). 18 Mas Davi disse a Saul: Quem sou eu, e qual é a minha vida e a família de meu pai em Israel, para vir a ser genro do rei? 19 Sucedeu, porém, que ao tempo que Merabe, filha de Saul, devia ser dada a Davi, ela foi dada por mulher a Adriel, meolatita.

20 Mas Mical, a outra filha de Saul, amava a Davi; o que, sendo anunciado a Saul, pareceu isso bom aos seus olhos. 21 E Saul disse: Eu lha darei, para que lhe sirva de laço e para que a mão dos filisteus venha a ser contra ele. Pelo que Saul disse a Davi: Com a outra serás hoje meu genro. 22 E Saul deu ordem aos seus servos: Falai em segredo a Davi, dizendo: Eis que o rei te está mui afeiçoado, e todos os seus servos te amam; agora, pois, consente em ser genro do rei. 23 E os servos de Saul falaram todas essas palavras aos ouvidos de Davi. Então, disse Davi: Parece-vos pouco aos vossos olhos ser genro do rei, sendo eu homem pobre e desprezível? 24 E os servos de Saul lhe anunciaram isso, dizendo: Foram tais as palavras que falou Davi. 25 Então, disse Saul: Assim direis a Davi: O rei não tem necessidade de dote, senão de cem prepúcios de filisteus, para se tomar vingança dos inimigos do rei. Porquanto Saul tentava fazer cair a Davi pela mão dos filisteus. 26 E anunciaram os seus servos essas palavras a Davi, e esse negócio pareceu bem aos olhos de Davi, de que fosse genro do rei; porém ainda os dias se não haviam cumprido. 27 Então, Davi se levantou e partiu ele com os seus homens, e feriram dentre os filisteus duzentos homens; e Davi trouxe os seus prepúcios, e os entregaram todos ao rei, para que fosse genro do rei; então, Saul lhe deu por mulher a sua filha. 28 E viu Saul e notou que o Senhor era com Davi; e Mical, filha de Saul, o amava. 29 Então, Saul temeu muito mais a Davi e Saul foi todos os seus dias inimigo de Davi.

30 E, saindo os príncipes dos filisteus para a batalha, sucedeu que Davi se conduziu mais prudentemente do que todos os servos de Saul; portanto, o seu nome era mui estimado.

1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.2 And Saul took him that day, and would not let him return to his father's house.3 And David and Jonathan made a covenant, for be loved him as his own soul.4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the coat with which he was clothed, and gave it to David, and the rest of his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.5 And David went out to whatsoever business Saul sent him, and he behaved himself prudently: and Saul set him over the soldiers, and he was acceptable in the eyes of all the people, and especially in the eyes of Saul's servants.6 Now when David returned, after be slew the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels of joy, and cornets.7 And the women sung as they played, and they said: I Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands.8 And Saul was exceeding angry, and this word was displeasing in his eyes, and he said: They have given David ten thousands, and to me they have given but a thousand; what can he have more but the kingdom?9 And Saul did not look on David with a good eye from that day and forward.10 And the day after the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David played with his hand as at other times. And Saul held a spear in his hand,11 And threw it, thinking to nail David to the wall: and David stept aside out of his presence twice.12 And Saul feared David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from himself.13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him a captain over a thousand men, and he went out and came in before the people.14 And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.15 And Saul saw that he was exceeding prudent, and began to beware of him.16 But all Israel and Juda loved David, for he came in and went out before them.17 And Saul said to David: Behold my elder daughter Merob, her will I give thee to wife: only be a valiant man, and fight the battles of the Lord. Now Saul said within himself: Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hands of the Philistines be upon him.18 And David said to Saul: Who am I, or what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law of the king?19 And it came to pass at the time when Merob the daughter of Saul should have been given to David, that she was given to Hadriel the Molathite to wife.20 But Michol the other daughter of Saul loved David. And it was told Saul, and it pleased him.21 And Saul said: I will give her to him, that she may be a stumblingblock to him, and that the band of the Philistines may be upon him. And Saul said to David: In two things thou shalt be my son in law this day.22 And Saul commanded his servants to speak to David privately, saying: Behold thou pleasest the king, and all his servants love thee. Now therefore be the king's son in law.23 And the servants of Saul spoke all these words in the ears of David. And David said: Doth it seem to you a small matter to be the king's son in law? But I am a poor man, and of small ability.24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying: Such words as these hath David spoken.25 And Saul said: Speak thus to David: The king desireth not any dowry, but only a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. Now Saul thought to deliver David into the hands of the Philistines.26 And when his servants had told David the words that Saul had said, the word was pleasing in the eyes of David to be the king's son in law.27 And after a few days David rose up, and went with the men that were under him, and he slew of the Philistines two hundred men, and brought their foreskins and numbered them out to the king, that he might be his son in law. Saul therefore gave him Michol his daughter to wife.28 And Saul saw, and understood that the Lord was with David. And Michol the daughter of Saul loved him.29 And Saul began to fear David more: and Saul became David's enemy continually.30 And the princes of the Philistines went forth: and from the beginning of their going forth, David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul, and his name became very famous.
