1 Eles dizem: Se um homem despedir sua mulher, e ela se ausentar dele e se ajuntar a outro homem, porventura, tornará a ela mais? Não se poluiria de todo aquela terra? Ora, tu te maculaste com muitos amantes; mas, ainda assim, torna para mim, diz o Senhor. 2 Levanta os olhos aos altos e vê; onde não te prostituíste? Nos caminhos te assentavas para eles, como o árabe no deserto; assim, manchaste a terra com as tuas devassidões e com a tua malícia. 3 Pelo que foram retiradas as chuvas, e não houve chuva tardia; mas tu tens a testa de uma prostituta e não queres ter vergonha. 4 Ao menos desde agora não me invocarás, dizendo: Pai meu, tu és o guia da minha mocidade? 5 Conservará ele para sempre a sua ira? Ou a guardará continuamente? Eis que tens dito e feito coisas más e nelas permaneces.

6 Disse mais o Senhor nos dias do rei Josias: Viste o que fez a rebelde Israel? Ela foi-se a todo monte alto e debaixo de toda árvore verde e ali andou prostituindo-se. 7 E eu disse, depois que fez tudo isto: Volta para mim; mas não voltou. E viu isso a sua aleivosa irmã Judá. 8 E, quando por causa de tudo isso, por ter cometido adultério, a rebelde Israel despedi e lhe dei o seu libelo de divórcio, vi que a aleivosa Judá, sua irmã, não temeu; mas foi-se e também ela mesma se prostituiu. 9 E sucedeu que, pela fama da sua prostituição, contaminou a terra; porque adulterou com a pedra e com o pedaço de madeira. 10 E, contudo, nem por tudo isso voltou para mim a sua aleivosa irmã Judá com sincero coração, mas falsamente, diz o Senhor.

11 E o Senhor me disse: Já a rebelde Israel justificou mais a sua alma do que a aleivosa Judá. 12 Vai, pois, e apregoa estas palavras para a banda do Norte, e dize: Volta, ó rebelde Israel, diz o Senhor, e não farei cair a minha ira sobre vós; porque benigno sou, diz o Senhor, e não conservarei para sempre a minha ira. 13 Somente reconhece a tua iniquidade, que contra o Senhor, teu Deus, transgrediste, e estendeste os teus caminhos aos estranhos, debaixo de toda árvore verde e não deste ouvidos à minha voz, diz o Senhor.

14 Convertei-vos, ó filhos rebeldes, diz o Senhor; porque eu vos desposarei e vos tomarei, a um de uma cidade e a dois de uma geração; e vos levarei a Sião. 15 E vos darei pastores segundo o meu coração, que vos apascentem com ciência e com inteligência. 16 E sucederá que, quando vos multiplicardes e frutificardes na terra, naqueles dias, diz o Senhor, nunca mais se dirá: A arca do concerto do Senhor! Nem lhes virá ao coração, nem dela se lembrarão, nem a visitarão; isso não se fará mais. 17 Naquele tempo, chamarão Jerusalém de trono do Senhor, e todas as nações se ajuntarão a ela, ao nome do Senhor, a Jerusalém; e nunca mais andarão segundo o propósito do seu coração maligno. 18 Naqueles dias, andará a casa de Judá com a casa de Israel; e virão, juntas, da terra do Norte, para a terra que dei em herança a vossos pais.

19 Mas eu dizia: Como te porei entre os filhos e te darei a terra desejável, a excelente herança dos exércitos das nações? E eu disse: Pai me chamarás e de mim te não desviarás. 20 Deveras, como a mulher se aparta aleivosamente do seu companheiro, assim aleivosamente te houveste comigo, ó casa de Israel, diz o Senhor. 21 Nos lugares altos se ouviu uma voz, pranto e súplicas dos filhos de Israel; porquanto perverteram o seu caminho e se esqueceram do Senhor, seu Deus. 22 Voltai, ó filhos rebeldes, eu curarei as vossas rebeliões. Eis-nos aqui, vimos a ti; porque tu és o Senhor, nosso Deus. 23 Certamente, em vão se confia nos outeiros e na multidão das montanhas; deveras, no Senhor, nosso Deus, está a salvação de Israel. 24 Porque a confusão devorou o trabalho de nossos pais, desde a nossa mocidade: as suas ovelhas, e as suas vacas, e os seus filhos, e as suas filhas. 25 Jazemos na nossa vergonha e estamos cobertos da nossa confusão, porque pecamos contra o Senhor, nosso Deus, nós e nossos pais, desde a nossa mocidade até o dia de hoje; e não demos ouvidos à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus.

1 It is commonly said: If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and marry another man, shall he return to her any more? shall not that woman be polluted, and defiled? but thou hast prostituted thyself to many lovers: nevertheless return to me, saith the Lord, and I will receive thee.2 Lift up thy eyes on high: and see where thou hast not prostuted thyself: Thou didst sit in the ways, waiting for them as a robber in the wilderness: and thou hast polluted the land with thy fornications, and with thy wickedness.3 Therefore the showers were withholden, and there was no lateward rain: thou hadst a harlot's forehead, thou wouldst not blush.4 Therefore at least at this time call to me: Thou art my father, the guide of my virginity:5 Wilt thou be angry for ever, or wilt thou continue until the end? Behold, thou hast spoken, and hast done evil things, and hast been able.6 And the Lord said to me in the days of king Josias: Hast thou seen what rebellious Israel hast done? she hath gone out of herself upon every high mountain, and under every green tree, and hath played the harlot there.7 And when she had done all these things, I said: Return to me, and she did not return. And her treacherous sister Juda saw,8 That because the rebellious Israel had played the harlot, I had put her away, and had given her a bill of divorce: yet her treacherous sister Juda was not afraid, but went and played the harlot also herself.9 And by the facility of her fornication she defiled the land, and played the harlot with stones and with stocks.10 And after all this, her treacherous sister Juda hath not returned to me with her whole heart, but with falsehood, saith the Lord.11 And the Lord said to me: The rebellious Israel hath justified her soul, in comparison of the treacherous Juda.12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and thou shalt say: Return, O rebellious Israel, saith the Lord, and I will not turn away my face from you: for I am holy, saith the Lord, and I will not be angry for ever.13 But yet acknowledge thy iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God: and thou hast scattered thy ways to strangers under every green tree, and hast not heard my voice, saith the Lord.14 Return, O ye revolting children, saith the Lord: for I am your husband: and I will take you, one of a city, and two of a kindred, and will bring you into Sion.15 And I will give you pastors according to my own heart, and they shall feed you with knowledge and doctrine.16 And when you shall be multiplied, and increase in the land in those days, saith the Lord, they shall say no more: The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither shall it come upon the heart, neither shall they remember it, neither shall it be visited, neither shall that be done any more.17 At that time Jerusalem shall be called the thrown of the Lord: and all the nations shall be gathered together to it, in the name of the Lord to Jerusalem, and they shall not walk after the perversity of their most wicked heart.18 In those days the house of Juda shall go to the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land which I gave to your fathers.19 But I said: How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a lovely land, the goodly inheritance of the armies of the Gentiles? And I said: Thou shalt call me father and shalt cease to walk after me.20 But as a woman that despiseth her lover, so hath the house of Israel despised me, saith the Lord.21 A voice was heard in the highways, weeping and howling of the children of Israel: because they have made their way wicked, they have forgotten the Lord their God.22 Return, you rebellious children, and I will heal your rebellions. Behold we come to thee: for thou art the Lord our God.23 In very deed the hills were liars. and the multitude of the mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.24 Confusion hath devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.25 We shall sleep in our confusion, and our shame shall cover us, because we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers from our youth even to this day, and we have not hearkened to the voice of theLord our God.
