1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and suburbs for the cities round about them shall ye give unto the Levites. 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their suburbs shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts. 4 And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. 5 And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the suburbs of the cities. 6 And the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which ye shall give for the manslayer to flee unto: and besides them ye shall give forty and two cities. 7 All the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities; them shall ye give with their suburbs. 8 And concerning the cities which ye shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many ye shall take many; and from the few ye shall take few: every one according to his inheritance which he inheriteth shall give of his cities unto the Levites.
9 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11 then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer that killeth any person unwittingly may flee thither. 12 And the cities shall be unto you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation for judgment. 13 And the cities which ye shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge. 14 Ye shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan; they shall be cities of refuge. 15 For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, shall these six cities be for refuge; that every one that killeth any person unwittingly may flee thither.
16 But if he smote him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 17 And if he smote him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 18 Or if he smote him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death: when he meeteth him, he shall put him to death. 20 And if he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died, 21 or in enmity smote him with his hand, so that he died; he that smote him shall surely be put to death; he is a murderer: the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meeteth him.
22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him anything without lying in wait, 23 or with any stone, whereby a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; 24 then the congregation shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances; 25 and the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. 26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, whither he fleeth, 27 and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; he shall not be guilty of blood, 28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return into the land of his possession.
29 And these things shall be for a statute and ordinance unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 30 Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be slain at the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person that he die. 31 Moreover ye shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer, that is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death. 32 And ye shall take no ransom for him that is fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. 33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood, it polluteth the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it. 34 And thou shalt not defile the land which ye inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell: for I, Jehovah, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel.
1 IL Signore parlò ancora a Mosè, nelle campagne di Moab, presso al Giordano di Gerico, dicendo:
2 Comanda a’ figliuoli d’Israele che dieno, della possessione della loro eredità, ai Leviti, delle città da abitare, e anche i contorni di esse città.
3 Abbiano adunque le città per abitarvi; e sieno i contorni di esse per li lor bestiami, per le lor facoltà, e per tutte le lor bestie.
4 E sieno i contorni delle città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, ciascuno di mille cubiti d’ogn’intorno, dalle mura della città in fuori.
5 Misurate adunque fuor della città duemila cubiti, per lo lato orientale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato meridionale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato occidentale, e duemila cubiti, per lo lato settentrionale, e sia la città nel mezzo. Questo sia loro lo spazio de’ contorni di quelle città.
6 E quant’è alle città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sienvi imprima le sei città di rifugio, le quali voi costituirete, acciocchè chi avrà ucciso alcuno vi si rifugga; e a quelle sopraggiugnetene quarantadue altre.
7 Tutte le città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sieno quarantotto città, insieme co’ lor contorni.
8 E di queste città, che voi darete a’ Leviti, dell’eredità dei figliuoli d’Israele, datene più, della tribù che sarà più grande; e meno, di quella che sarà più piccola. Ciascuna tribù dia delle sue città a’ Leviti, a ragion della sua eredità ch’ella possederà
9 Poi il Signore parlò a Mosè, dicendo:
10 Parla a’ figliuoli d’Israele, e di’ loro: Quando voi sarete passati il Giordano, e sarete entrati nel paese di Canaan,
11 assegnate fra voi delle città di rifugio, nelle quali l’ucciditore, che avrà percossa a morte alcuna persona disavvedutamente, si rifugga.
12 E quelle città vi saranno per rifugio d’innanzi a colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue; acciocchè l’ucciditore non muoia, finchè non sia comparito in giudicio davanti alla raunanza.
13 Di quelle città adunque, che voi darete a’ Leviti, sienvene sei di rifugio.
14 Assegnate tre di quelle città di qua dal Giordano; e tre altre, nel paese di Canaan, per esser città di rifugio.
15 Sieno queste sei città per rifugio, a’ figliuoli d’Israele, a’ forestieri, e agli avveniticci che saranno fra loro; acciocchè vi si rifugga chiunque avrà percossa a morte alcuna persona disavvedutamente.
16 Ora, se alcuno percuote un altro con alcuno strumento di ferro, colui è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
17 Parimente, se lo percuote con una pietra da mano della qual possa morire, ed esso muore, egli è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
18 Simigliantemente, se lo percuote con uno strumento di legno da mano, del quale egli possa morire, ed esso muore, egli è micidiale; del tutto facciasi morire quel micidiale.
19 Colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue faccia morire quel micidiale; quando lo scontrerà egli stesso lo potrà uccidere.
20 Così ancora se lo spinge per odio, o gli gitta contro alcuna cosa apposta, onde sia morto;
21 ovvero per nimicizia lo percuote con la mano, ed esso muore, del tutto sia il percotitore fatto morire; egli è micidiale; colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue potrà uccidere quel micidiale, quando lo scontrerà.
22 Ma, s’egli lo spinge, o gli gitta contro impensatamente, senza nimicizia, qualche strumento, ma non apposta;
23 ovvero, senza averlo veduto, gli fa cadere addosso alcuna pietra, della quale egli possa morire, ed esso muore, senza che gli fosse nimico, o procacciasse il suo male;
24 allora giudichi la raunanza fra il percotitore, e colui che ha la ragion di vendicare il sangue, secondo queste leggi;
25 e riscuota l’ucciditore dalle mani di colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue, e faccialo ritornare alla città del suo rifugio, ove si era rifuggito; e dimori egli quivi, fino alla morte del sommo Sacerdote, il qual sarà stato unto con l’olio santo.
26 Ma, se pur l’ucciditore esce fuor de’ confini della città del suo rifugio, ove egli si sarà rifuggito;
27 e colui che ha la ragione di vendicare il sangue, trovandolo fuor de’ confini della città del suo rifugio, l’uccide; egli non è colpevole d’omicidio.
28 Perciocchè colui ha da star nella città del suo rifugio, fino alla morte del sommo Sacerdote; e dopo la morte del sommo Sacerdote, l’ucciditore potrà ritornare alla terra della sua possessione.
29 Sienvi adunque queste cose per istatuto di legge, per le vostre generazioni, in tutte le vostre stanze.
30 Quando alcuno avrà percossa a morte una persona, sia quel micidiale ucciso, in sul dire di più testimoni; ma non possa un solo testimonio render testimonianza contro a una persona a morte.
31 E non prendete prezzo di riscatto per la vita dell’ucciditore, il quale è colpevole, e degno di morte; anzi del tutto sia fatto morire.
32 Parimente non prendete alcun prezzo, per lasciar rifuggire alcuno alla città del suo rifugio; nè per ritornare a dimorar nel paese avanti la morte del Sacerdote.
33 E non profanate il paese, nel quale voi abiterete; conciossiachè il sangue profani il paese; e il paese non può esser purgato del sangue, che sarà stato sparso in esso, se non col sangue di chi l’avrà sparso.
34 Non profanate adunque il paese, nel quale voi dimorerete, in mezzo del quale io abiterò; perciocchè io sono il Signore, che abito per mezzo i figliuoli d’Israele
