1 Saul was forty years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, 2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent. 3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba; and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. 4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

5 And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits. 7 Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring hither the burnt-offering to me, and the peace-offerings. And he offered the burnt-offering. 10 And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. 11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash; 12 therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt-offering. 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of Jehovah thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would Jehovah have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah hath sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee. 15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin.

And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual; 18 and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20 but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock; 21 yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads. 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmash.

1 Saül avait régné un an, et il régna deux ans sur Israël.

2 Et Saül choisit trois mille hommes d'Israël, dont il y en avait deux mille avec lui à Micmas, et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille étaient avec Jonathan à Guébah de Benjamin; et il renvoya le reste du peuple, chacun en sa tente.

3 Et Jonathan frappa la garnison des Philistins qui était au coteau, et cela fut su des Philistins; et Saül le fit publier au son de la trompette par tout le pays, en disant : Que les Hébreux écoutent.

4 Ainsi tout Israël entendit dire : Saül a frappé la garnison des Philistins, et Israël est en mauvaise odeur parmi les Philistins. Et le peuple s'assembla auprès de Saül à Guilgal.

5 Les Philistins aussi s'assemblèrent pour faire la guerre à Israël, ayant trente mille chariots, et six mille hommes de cheval; et le peuple était comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, tant il était en grand nombre; ils montèrent donc et se campèrent à Micmas, vers l'Orient de Beth-aven.

6 Mais ceux d'Israël se virent dans une grande angoisse; car le peuple était fort abattu, c'est pourquoi le peuple se cacha dans les cavernes, dans les buissons épais, dans les rochers, dans les forts, et dans des fosses.

7 Et les Hébreux passèrent le Jourdain [pour aller] au pays de Gad, et de Galaad. Or comme Saül était encore à Guilgal, tout le peuple effrayé se rangea vers lui.

8 Et [Saül] attendit sept jours selon l'assignation de Samuel; mais Samuel ne venait point à Guilgal, et le peuple s'écartait d'auprès de Saül.

9 Et Saül dit : Amenez-moi un holocauste, et des sacrifices de prospérités; et il offrit l'holocauste.

10 Or il arriva qu'aussitôt qu'il eut achevé d'offrir l'holocauste, voici, Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer.

11 Et Samuel lui dit : Qu'as-tu fait? Saül répondit : Parce que je voyais que le peuple s'écartait d'avec moi, et que tu ne venais point au jour assigné, et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Micmas;

12 J'ai dit : Les Philistins descendront maintenant contre moi à Guilgal, et je n'ai point supplié l'Eternel ; et après m'être retenu, [quelque temps], j'ai enfin offert l'holocauste.

13 Alors Samuel dit à Saül : Tu as agi follement, en ce que tu n'as point gardé le commandement que l'Eternel ton Dieu t'avait ordonné; car l'Eternel aurait maintenant affermi ton règne sur Israël à toujours.

14 Mais maintenant ton règne ne sera point affermi; l'Eternel s'est cherché un homme selon son cœur, et l'Eternel lui a commandé d'être le Conducteur de son peuple, parce que tu n'as point gardé ce que l'Eternel t'avait commandé.

15 Puis Samuel se leva, et monta de Guilgal à Guébah de Benjamin. Et Saül dénombra le peuple qui se trouva avec lui, qui fut d'environ six cents hommes.

16 Or Saül et son fils Jonathan, et le peuple qui se trouva avec eux, se tenaient à Guébah de Benjamin, et les Philistins étaient campés à Micmas.

17 Et il sortit trois bandes du camp des Philistins pour faire du dégât; l'une de ces bandes prit le chemin de Hophra, vers le pays de Suhal.

18 L'autre bande prit le chemin de Beth-oron; et la troisième prit le chemin de la frontière qui regarde vers la vallée de Tsébohim, du côté du désert.

19 r dans tout le pays d'Israël il ne se trouvait aucun forgeron; car les Philistins avaient dit : [Il faut empêcher] que les Hébreux ne fassent des épées ou des hallebardes.

20 C'est pourquoi tout Israël descendait vers les Philistins, chacun pour aiguiser son soc, son coutre, sa cognée, et son hoyau;

21 Lorsque leurs hoyaux, leurs coutres, leurs fourches à trois dents, et leurs cognées avaient la pointe gâtée, même pour raccommoder un aiguillon.

22 C'est pourquoi il arriva que le jour du combat il ne se trouva ni épée, ni hallebarde, en la main d'aucun du peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathan, et il n'y eut que Saül et Jonathan en qui il s'en trouvât.

23 Et le corps de garde des Philistins sortit au passage de Micmas.
