1 Timothy 3

1 Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money; 4 one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Deacons in like manner must be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless. 11 Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly; 15 but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness;

He who was manifested in the flesh,

Justified in the spirit,

Seen of angels,

Preached among the nations,

Believed on in the world,

Received up in glory.

1 Cette parole est certaine: Si quelqu’un désire d’être évêque, il désire une œuvre excellente.

2 Mais il faut que l’évêque soit irrépréhensible, mari d’une seule femme, sobre, prudent, grave, hospitalier, propre à enseigner;

3 Qu’il ne soit pas adonné au vin, ni violent, ni porté au gain déshonnête, mais qu’il soit modéré, éloigné des querelles, exempt d’avarice;

4 Qu’il gouverne bien sa propre famille, tenant ses enfants dans la soumission et dans toute sorte d’honnêteté.

5 Car si quelqu’un ne sait pas conduire sa propre famille, comment pourra-t-il gouverner l’Eglise de Dieu?

6 Qu’il ne soit point nouvellement converti, de peur qu’étant enflé d’orgueil, il ne tombe dans la condamnation du diable.

7 Il faut aussi qu’il ait bon témoignage de ceux qui sont hors de l’Eglise, de peur qu’il ne tombe dans l’opprobre et dans le piége du diable.

8 De même, il faut que les diacres soient graves, qu’ils ne soient ni doubles en paroles, ni adonnés aux excès du vin, ni portée au gain déshonnête;

9 Mais qu’ils conservent le mystère de la foi avec une conscience pure;

10 Et que ceux-ci soient aussi premièrement éprouvés; qu’ensuite ils servent, s’ils sont trouvés sans reproche.

11 Il faut de même, que leurs femmes soient graves, qu’elles ne soient point médisantes, qu’elles soient sobres, et fidèles en toutes choses.

12 Que les diacres soient maris d’une seule femme, gouvernant bien leurs enfants et leurs propres familles.

13 Car ceux qui auront bien servi, s’acquièrent un degré honorable, et une grande liberté dans foi qui est en Jésus-Christ.

14 Je t’écris ceci, espérant d’aller te voir bientôt;

15 Afin que, si je tarde, tu saches comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu qui est l’Eglise du Dieu vivant, la colonne et l’appui de la vérité.

16 Et, certainement, le mystère de piété est grand; Dieu a été manifesté en chair, justifié par l’Esprit, vu des anges, prêché aux Gentils, cru dans le monde, et élevé dans la gloire.
