3 John 1

1 The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.

2 Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth. 4 Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

5 Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal; 6 who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God: 7 because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.

9 I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church. 11 Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 12 Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness; and thou knowest that our witness is true.

13 I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen: 14 but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.

2 Mon très cher, je souhaite que tu te portes bien, et que tu sois à tous égards en aussi bon état que tu l’es à l’égard de ton âme.

3 Car j’ai eu bien de la joie du témoignage que nos frères, qui sont arrivés ici, ont rendu à ta fidélité, et à la manière dont tu marches dans la vérité.

4 Je n’ai point de plus grande joie que d’apprendre que mes enfants marchent dans la vérité.

5 Mon très cher, tu agis fidèlement dans tout ce que tu fais à l’égard des frères, et à l’égard des étrangers;

6 Qui ont rendu témoignage à ta charité en présence de l’Eglise; tu feras bien de les faire conduire et assister dans leur voyage, d’une manière digne de Dieu.

7 Car ils se sont mis en chemin pour son nom, sans rien prendre des Gentils.

8 Nous devons donc recevoir de telles personnes, afin d’aider à l’avancement de la vérité.

9 J’ai écrit à l’Eglise, mais Diotrèphe, qui aime à être le premier parmi eux, ne nous reçoit point.

10 C’est pourquoi, si je vais chez vous, je le ferai souvenir de ce qu’il fait, en tenant des discours malins contre nous; et ne se contentant pas de cela, non-seulement il ne reçoit pas lui-même les frères, mais il empêche ceux qui voudraient les recevoir, et les chasse de l’Eglise.

11 Mon très-cher, n’imite pas ce qui est mauvais, mais imite ce qui est bon. Celui qui fait le bien, est de Dieu; mais celui qui fait le mal n’a point vu Dieu.

12 Tous rendent un bon témoignage à Démétrius, et la vérité elle-même le lui rend; nous le lui rendons aussi, et vous savez que notre témoignage est véritable.

13 J’avais plusieurs choses à te dire, mais je ne veux pas le faire avec la plume et l’encre;

14 Car j’espère de te voir bientôt, et nous parlerons bouche à bouche.

15 La paix soit avec toi. Les amis te saluent. Salue les amis, chacun en particulier.
