Philemon 1

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our beloved and fellow-worker, 2 and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the church in thy house: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God always, making mention of thee in my prayers, 5 hearing of thy love, and of the faith which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all the saints; 6 that the fellowship of thy faith may become effectual, in the knowledge of every good thing which is in you, unto Christ. 7 For I had much joy and comfort in thy love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through thee, brother.

8 Wherefore, though I have all boldness in Christ to enjoin thee that which is befitting, 9 yet for love’s sake I rather beseech, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now a prisoner also of Christ Jesus: 10 I beseech thee for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, Onesimus, 11 who once was unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable to thee and to me: 12 whom I have sent back to thee in his own person, that is, my very heart: 13 whom I would fain have kept with me, that in thy behalf he might minister unto me in the bonds of the gospel: 14 but without thy mind I would do nothing; that thy goodness should not be as of necessity, but of free will. 15 For perhaps he was therefore parted from thee for a season, that thou shouldest have him for ever; 16 no longer as a servant, but more than a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much rather to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord. 17 If then thou countest me a partner, receive him as myself. 18 But if he hath wronged thee at all, or oweth thee aught, put that to mine account; 19 I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not unto thee that thou owest to me even thine own self besides. 20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my heart in Christ.

21 Having confidence in thine obedience I write unto thee, knowing that thou wilt do even beyond what I say. 22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I hope that through your prayers I shall be granted unto you.

23 Epaphras, my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus, saluteth thee; 24 and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow-workers.

25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

1 Paul, prisonnier pour Jésus-Christ, et Timothée notre frère, à Philémon notre bien-aimé, et le compagnon de nos travaux;

2 Et à Appie, notre chère sœur, à Archippe, compagnon de nos combats, et à l’Eglise qui est dans ta maison;

3 La grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu notre Père, et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ.

4 Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, faisant toujours mention de toi dans mes prières:,

5 Apprenant la foi que tu as au Seigneur Jésus, et ta charité envers tous les saints;

6 De sorte que la foi qui t’est commune avec nous, est efficace, et se fait connaître par tout le bien qui se fait parmi vous, pour Jésus-Christ.

7 Car, mon frère, ta charité nous a donné une grande joie et une grande consolation, parce que tu as réjoui les entrailles des saints.

8 C’est pourquoi, bien que j’aie en Jésus-Christ le pouvoir de te commander ce qui est convenable;

9 Etant ce que je suis, Paul, avancé en âge, et même maintenant prisonnier pour Jésus-Christ, cependant j’aime mieux te prier par charité.

10 Je te prie donc pour mon fils Onésime, que j’ai engendré étant dans les chaînes;

11 Qui t’a autrefois été inutile, mais qui te sera présentement très utile, aussi bien qu’à moi, et que je te renvoie.

12 Reçois-le donc comme mes propres entrailles.

13 J’aurais souhaité de le retenir auprès de moi, afin qu’il me servit au lieu de toi, dans les liens où je suis à cause de l’évangile;

14 Mais je n’ai rien voulu faire sans ton consentement, afin que le bien que tu feras, ne soit pas forcé, mais qu’il soit volontaire.

15 Car, peut-être que ce qu’il a été séparé de toi pour quelque temps, c’était afin que tu le recouvrasses pour toujours;

16 Non plus comme un esclave, mais comme étant fort au-dessus d’un esclave, savoir, comme un frère chéri particulièrement de moi, et combien plus de toi, et selon le monde, et selon le Seigneur.

17 Si donc tu me regardes comme uni avec toi, reçois-le comme si c’était moi-même.

18 Que s’il t’a fait quelque tort, ou s’il te doit quelque chose, mets-le sur mon compte.

19 C’est moi, Paul, qui t’écris de ma propre main; je te le rendrai; pour ne pas dire que tu te dois toi-même à moi.

20 Oui, mon frère, que je reçoive ce plaisir de toi en notre Seigneur; réjouis mes entrailles au nom du Seigneur.

21 Je t’écris ceci étant persuadé de la déférence que tu auras pour moi, sachant même que tu feras plus que je ne le dis.

22 Je te prie en même temps de me préparer un logement, car j’espère que je vous serai rendu par vos prières.

23 Epaphras, qui est prisonnier avec moi pour Jésus-Christ, te salue;

24 Ce que font aussi Marc, Aristarque, Démas et Luc, mes compagnons de travaux.

25 La grâce de notre Seigneur Jésus- Christ soit avec votre esprit. Amen.
