John 4

1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples), 3 he left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And he must needs pass through Samaria. 5 So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph: 6 and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband: 18 for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly. 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father. 22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27 And upon this came his disciples; and they marvelled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her? 28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the people, 29 Come, see a man, who told me all things that ever I did: can this be the Christ? 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him. 31 In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat. 32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not. 33 The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work. 35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest. 36 He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. 37 For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. 38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored: others have labored, and ye are entered into their labor.

39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that ever I did. 40 So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word; 42 and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

43 And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. 45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilæans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe. 49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. 50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. 54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judæa into Galilee.

1 Le Seigneur ayant donc appris que les Pharisiens avaient ouï dire qu’il faisait et baptisait plus de disciples que Jean,

2 (Toutefois ce n’était pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisait, mais c’étaient ses disciples,)

3 Il quitta la Judée, et s’en retourna en Galilée.

4 Or, il fallait qu’il passât par la Samarie.

5 Il arriva donc à une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, qui est près de la possession que Jacob donna à Joseph son fils.

6 C’était là qu’était le puits de Jacob. Jésus donc, étant fatigué du chemin, s’assit près du puits; c’était environ la sixième heure du jour.

7 Une femme samaritaine étant venue pour puiser de l’eau, Jésus lui dit: Donne-moi à boire.

8 Car ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.

9 Cette femme samaritaine lui répondit: Comment toi, qui es Juif, me demandes-tu à boire, à moi qui suis une femme samaritaine? car les Juifs n’ont point de communication avec les Samaritains.

10 Jésus répondit et lui dit: Si tu connaissais la grâce que Dieu te fait, et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, tu lui en aurais demandé toi-même, et il t’aurait donné une eau vive.

11 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, tu n’as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond; d’où aurais-tu donc cette eau vive?

12 Es-tu plus grand que Jacob notre père, qui nous a donné ce puits et qui en a bu lui-même, aussi bien que ses enfants et ses troupeaux?

13 Jésus lui répondit: Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif;

14 Mais celui qui boira de l’eau que je lui donnerai n’aura jamais soif, mais l’eau que je lui donnerai deviendra en lui une source d’eau qui jaillira jusqu’à la vie éternelle.

15 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, donne-moi de cette eau, afin que je n’aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour en puiser.

16 Jésus lui dit: Va, appelle ton mari, et viens ici.

17 La femme répondit: Je n’ai point de mari. Jésus lui dit: Tu as fort bien dit: Je n’ai point de mari;

18 Car tu as eu cinq maris; et celui que tu as maintenant n’est pas ton mari; tu as dit vrai en cela.

19 La femme lui dit: Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète.

20 Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne, et vous dites, vous autres, que le lieu où il faut adorer est à Jérusalem.

21 Jésus lui dit: Femme, crois-moi, le temps vient que vous n’adorerez plus le Père ni sur cette montagne, ni à Jérusalem.

22 Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez point; pour nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons; car le salut vient des Juifs.

23 Mais le temps vient et il est déjà venu, que les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité, car le Père demande de tels adorateurs.

24 Dieu est esprit et il faut que ceux qui l’adorent, l’adorent en esprit et en vérité.

25 Cette femme lui répondit: Je sais que le Messie, c’est-à-dire le Christ, doit venir; quand il sera venu, il nous annoncera toutes choses.

26 Jésus lui dit: Je le suis, moi, qui te parle.

27 Sur cela ses disciples arrivèrent, et ils furent surpris de ce qu’il parlait avec une femme; néanmoins aucun d’eux ne lui dit: Que lui demandes-tu? ou: Pourquoi parles-tu avec elle?

28 La femme laissa donc sa cruche, et s’en alla à la ville, et dit aux gens du lieu:

29 Venez voir un homme qui m’a dit tout ce que j’ai fait; ne serait-ce point le Christ?

30 Ils sortirent donc de la ville, et vinrent vers lui.

31 Cependant, ses disciples lui disaient, en l’en priant: Maître, mange.

32 Jésus leur dit: J’ai à manger d’une viande que vous ne connaissez pas.

33 Les disciples donc se disaient l’un à l’autre: Quelqu’un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?

34 Jésus leur dit: Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé, et d’accomplir son œuvre.

35 Ne dites-vous pas qu’il y a encore quatre mois jusqu’à la moisson? Mais moi je vous dis: Levez vos yeux, et regardez les campagnes qui sont déjà blanches et prêtes à être moissonnées.

36 Celui qui moissonne en reçoit la récompense, et amasse le fruit pour la vie éternelle, en sorte que celui qui sème et celui qui moissonne en ont ensemble de la joie.

37 Car en ceci, ce qu’on dit est vrai, que l’un sème et que l’autre moissonne.

38 Je vous ai envoyé moissonner où vous n’avez pas travaillé; d’autres ont travaillé, et vous êtes entrés dans leur travail.

39 Or, plusieurs des Samaritains de cette ville-là crurent en lui, à cause de cette parole de la femme qui avait rendu ce témoignage: Il m’a dit tout ce que j’ai fait.

40 Les Samaritains étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de demeurer chez eux; et il demeura là deux jours.

41 Et il y en eut beaucoup plus qui crurent en lui, après l’avoir entendu.

42 Et ils disaient à la femme: Ce n’est plus à cause de ce que tu nous as dit, que nous croyons; car nous l’avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons que c’est lui qui est véritablement le Christ, le Sauveur du monde.

43 Deux jours après, il partit de là, et s’en alla en Galilée,

44 Quoique Jésus eût déclaré lui-même qu’un prophète n’est point honoré en son pays.

45 Lorsqu’il fut arrivé en Galilée, il fut bien reçu des Galiléens, qui avaient vu tout ce qu’il avait fait à Jérusalem le jour de la fête; car ils étaient aussi allés à la fête.

46 Jésus donc vint encore à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l’eau en vin. Et il y avait un seigneur de la cour, dont le fils était malade à Capernaüm.

47 Ce seigneur, ayant appris que Jésus était venu de Judée en Galilée, s’en alla vers lui et le pria de descendre pour guérir son fils, qui s’en allait mourir.

48 Jésus lui dit: Si vous ne voyez des signes et des miracles, vous ne croyez point.

49 Ce seigneur de la cour lui dit: Seigneur, descends, avant que mon fils meure.

50 Jésus lui dit: Va, ton fils se porte bien. Cet homme crut ce que Jésus lui avait dit, et s’en alla.

51 Et comme il s’en retournait, ses serviteurs vinrent au-devant de lui, qui lui dirent: Ton fils se porte bien.

52 Il leur demanda à quelle heure il s’était trouvé mieux. Et ils lui dirent: Hier, environ la septième heure du jour, la fièvre le quitta.

53 Et le père reconnut que c’était à cette même heure-là que Jésus lui avait dit: Ton fils se porte bien; et il crut, lui et toute sa maison.

54 Jésus fit ce second miracle à son retour de Judée en Galilée.
