James 2

1 My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing; 3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool; 4 do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? 6 But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats? 7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called? 8 Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: 9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is become guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself. 18 Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith. 19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect; 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God. 24 Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. 25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

1 Mes frères, que la foi que vous avez en notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ glorifié, soit exempte de toute acception de personnes.

2 Car s’il entre dans votre assemblée un homme qui ait un anneau d’or et un habit magnifique, et qu’il y entre aussi un pauvre avec un méchant habit;

3 Et qu’ayant égard à celui qui porte l’habit magnifique, vous lui disiez: Toi, assieds-toi ici honorablement; et que vous disiez au pauvre: Toi, tiens-toi là debout, ou assieds-toi ici sur mon marchepied;

4 Ne faites-vous pas en vous-mêmes de la différence entre l’un et l’autre, et n’avez-vous pas de mauvaises pensées dans les jugements que vous faites?

5 Ecoutez, mes chers frères; Dieu n’a-t-il pas choisi les pauvres de ce monde qui sont riches en la foi et héritiers du royaume qu’il a promis à ceux qui l’aiment?

6 Et vous, au contraire, vous méprisez les pauvres. Ne sont-ce pas les riches qui vous oppriment et qui vous tirent devant les tribunaux?

7 Ne sont-ce pas eux qui blasphèment le beau nom qui a été invoqué sur vous?

8 Si vous accomplissez la loi royale, selon l’Ecriture, qui dit: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même, vous faites bien.

9 Mais si vous avez égard à l’apparence des personnes, vous commettez un péché, et vous êtes condamnés par la loi comme des transgresseurs.

10 Car, quiconque aura observé toute la loi, s’il vient à pécher dans un seul commandement, il est coupable comme s’il les avait tous violés.

11 Car, celui qui a dit: Tu ne commettras point adultère, a dit aussi: Tu ne tueras point. Si donc tu ne commets pas adultère, mais que tu tues, tu es transgresseur de la loi.

12 Parlez et agissez comme devant être jugés par la loi de la liberté.

13 Car il y aura une condamnation sans miséricorde sur celui qui n’aura point usé de miséricorde; mais la miséricorde s’élève par-dessus la condamnation.

14 Mes frères, que servira-t-il à un homme de dire qu’il a la foi, s’il n’a point les œuvres? Cette foi le pourra-t-elle sauver?

15 Et si un frère ou une sœur sont nus, et qu’ils manquent de la nourriture qui leur est nécessaire chaque jour;

16 Et que quelqu’un d’entre vous leur dise: Allez en paix, chauffez-vous et vous rassasiez, et que vous ne leur donniez point ce qui leur est nécessaire pour le corps, à quoi cela servira-t-il?

17 De même aussi la foi, si elle n’a pas les œuvres, elle est morte en elle-même.

18 Quelqu’un dira: Tu as la foi, et moi, j’ai les œuvres. Montre-moi donc ta foi par tes œuvres, et moi, je te montrerai ma foi par mes œuvres.

19 Tu crois qu’il y a un seul Dieu; tu fais bien; les démons le croient aussi et ils en tremblent.

20 Mais, ô homme vain, veux-tu savoir que la foi qui est sans les œuvres est morte?

21 Abraham notre père, ne fut-il pas justifié par les œuvres lorsqu’il offrit Isaac son fils sur un autel?

22 Ne vois-tu pas que la foi agissait avec ses œuvres, et que par ses œuvres sa foi fut rendue parfaite?

23 Et qu’ainsi ce que dit l’Ecriture, s’accomplit: Abraham a cru en Dieu, et cela lui a été imputé à justice, et il a été appelé ami de Dieu.

24 Vous voyez donc que l’homme est justifié par les œuvres, et non par la foi seulement.

25 De même aussi Rahab l’hôtelière, ne fut-elle pas justifiée par les œuvres, lorsqu’elle reçut les messagers, et qu’elle les renvoya par un autre chemin?

26 Car comme un corps sans âme est mort, de même, la foi sans les œuvres est morte.
