1 Now the Philistines gathered together all their hosts to Aphek: and the Israelites encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel. 2 And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rearward with Achish. 3 Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who hath been with me these days, or rather these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell away unto me unto this day? 4 But the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us: for wherewith should this fellow reconcile himself unto his lord? should it not be with the heads of these men? 5 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying,

Saul hath slain his thousands,

And David his ten thousands?

6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, As Jehovah liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favor thee not. 7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines. 8 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been before thee unto this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king? 9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle. 10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of thy lord that are come with thee; and as soon as ye are up early in the morning, and have light, depart. 11 So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Afec, și Israel tăbărâse la fântâna lui Izreel. 2 Domnii filistenilor au înaintat cu sutele și miile lor, și David și oamenii lui mergeau mai la coadă, cu*Cap. 28:1,2. Achiș. 3 Domnii filistenilor au zis: „Ce caută evreii aceștia aici?" Și Achiș a răspuns domnitorilor filistenilor: „Acesta este David, slujitorul lui Saul, împăratul lui Israel. De mult*Cap. 27:7. este cu mine și n-am găsit*Dan. 6:5. nici cel mai mic lucru de care să-l învinuiesc, de la venirea lui și până în ziua de azi." 4 Dar domnitorii filistenilor s-au mâniat pe Achiș și i-au zis: „Trimite înapoi*1 Cron. 12:19. pe omul acesta, ca să se întoarcă în locul unde l-ai așezat, să nu se coboare cu noi pe câmpul de bătaie, ca să nu ne fie vrăjmaș în timpul luptei*Cap. 14:21.. Și cum ar putea să se facă omul acesta plăcut stăpânului său decât cu capetele oamenilor noștri?

5 Nu este acesta David pentru care cântau jucând:

‘Saul și-a bătut miile lui*Cap. 18:7;21:11.,

Iar David, zecile lui de mii’?"

6 Achiș a chemat pe David și i-a zis: „Viu este Domnul că ești un om curat la suflet și-mi place să te văd mergând*2 Sam. 3:25.2 Împ. 19:27. și venind cu mine în tabără, căci n-am găsit*Vers. 3. nimic rău în tine, de la venirea ta la mine până în ziua de azi, dar nu ești pe placul domnitorilor. 7 Întoarce-te dar și mergi în pace, ca să nu faci nimic neplăcut înaintea domnitorilor filistenilor." 8 David a zis lui Achiș: „Dar ce am făcut și ce ai găsit în robul tău, de când sunt la tine până în ziua de azi, ca să nu merg să lupt împotriva vrăjmașilor domnului meu, împăratul?" 9 Achiș a răspuns lui David: „Știu că ești plăcut înaintea mea ca*2 Sam. 14:17,20;19:27. un înger al lui Dumnezeu, dar domnitorii*Vers. 4. filistenilor au zis: ‘Să nu se suie cu noi la luptă.’ 10 Astfel, scoală-te dis-de-dimineață, tu și slujitorii stăpânului tău care au venit cu tine; sculați-vă dis-de-dimineață și plecați de îndată ce se va lumina." 11 David și oamenii lui s-au sculat din noapte de tot, ca să plece dimineața și să se întoarcă în țara filistenilor. Și filistenii*2 Sam. 4:4. s-au suit la Izreel.
