1 Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Open your hearts to us: we wronged no man, we corrupted no man, we took advantage of no man. 3 I say it not to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die together and live together. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying on your behalf: I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our affliction.

5 For even when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, but we were afflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 6 Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more. 8 For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it: though I did regret it (for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season), 9 I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter. 12 So although I wrote unto you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be made manifest unto you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore we have been comforted: and in our comfort we joyed the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit hath been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have gloried to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame; but as we spake all things to you in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth. 15 And his affection is more abundantly toward you, while he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 16 I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.

2 Înțelegeți-ne bine! N-am nedreptățit pe*Fapte 20:33. Cap. 12:17. nimeni, n-am vătămat pe nimeni, n-am înșelat pe nimeni. 3 Nu spun aceste lucruri ca să vă osândesc, căci*Cap. 6:11,12. am spus mai înainte că sunteți în inimile noastre pe viață și pe moarte. 4 Am o mare*Cap. 3:12. încredere în voi. Am tot dreptul să mă laud cu voi. Sunt plin*1 Cor. 1:4. Cap. 1:14. de mângâiere*Cap. 1:4.Filip. 2:17.Col. 1:24., îmi saltă inima de bucurie în toate necazurile noastre. 5 Căci și după venirea*Cap. 2:13. noastră în Macedonia, trupul nostru n-a avut nicio odihnă. Am*Cap. 4:8. fost necăjiți în toate chipurile: de*Deut. 32:25. afară lupte, dinăuntru temeri. 6 Dar Dumnezeu*Cap. 1:4., care mângâie pe cei smeriți, ne-a mângâiat prin venirea lui Tit. 7 Și nu numai prin venirea*Cap. 2:13. lui, ci și prin mângâierea cu care a fost mângâiat și el de voi. El ne-a istorisit despre dorința voastră arzătoare, despre lacrimile voastre, despre râvna voastră pentru mine, așa că bucuria mea a fost și mai mare. 8 Măcar*Cap. 2:4. că v-am întristat prin epistola mea, nu-mi pare rău și chiar dacă mi-ar fi părut rău – căci văd că epistola aceea v-a întristat (măcar că pentru puțină vreme) – 9 totuși acum mă bucur, nu pentru că ați fost întristați, ci pentru că întristarea voastră v-a adus la pocăință. Căci ați fost întristați*2 Sam. 12:13.Mat. 26:75. după voia lui Dumnezeu, ca să n-aveți nicio pagubă din partea noastră. 10 În adevăr, când întristarea este după voia lui Dumnezeu, aduce o pocăință care duce la mântuire și de care cineva nu se căiește niciodată, pe când*Prov. 17:22. întristarea lumii aduce moartea. 11 Căci uite, tocmai întristarea aceasta a voastră după voia lui Dumnezeu ce frământare a trezit în voi! Și ce cuvinte de dezvinovățire! Ce mânie! Ce frică! Ce dorință aprinsă! Ce râvnă! Ce pedeapsă! În toate voi ați arătat că sunteți curați în privința aceasta. 12 Așa că, dacă v-am scris, nu v-am scris nici din pricina celui ce a făcut ocara, nici din pricina celui ce a suferit ocara, ci*Cap. 2:4. ca să se arate marea noastră purtare de grijă pentru voi înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 13 De aceea am fost mângâiați. Dar, pe lângă mângâierea aceasta a noastră, ne-am bucurat și mai mult de bucuria lui Tit, al cărui duh a*Rom. 15:32. fost răcorit de voi toți. 14 Și dacă m-am lăudat puțin cu voi înaintea lui, n-am fost dat de rușine. Ci, după cum în orice lucru v-am spus adevărul, tot așa și lauda noastră cu voi înaintea lui Tit s-a adeverit. 15 El are o și mai mare dragoste pentru voi, când își aduce aminte de ascultarea*Cap. 2:9.Filip. 2:12. voastră a tuturor și de primirea pe care i-ați făcut-o, cu frică și cutremur. 16 Mă bucur că mă pot încrede în voi în*2 Tes. 3:4.Filim. 8,21. toate privințele.
